I recommend the World Fact Book: https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html

There you can find a plethora of information about any country and you know all of the statistics are up to date.

Don't know websites, but the two problems are linked. Poor farmers clear the forests to grow food. Never been to Brazil but you can see this for yourself in the Colombian Andes.

Most of SA is very poor by our standards. The culture, history and social structure are all part of it.

Democratic Capitalism can generate a lot of wealth, but you won't find that in most of Latin America. The economies tend to be socialist or mercantilist, with a few families using the political structure to maintain the status quo.
