Leaving tomorrow... i'm scared!!?

Ok so tomorrow i'm going on a trip to belize, we're staying in the jungle for 4 days and the beach for 3. I'm really scared that someone is going to try and mug/rape me, i'm also afraid i'll catch a disease from a bug bit, or i'll drink bad water and get sick!! i know all of these fears are very irrational but any help you can give me on staying safe and having a good time would be very well appreciated! any tips?

The risk of getting malaria in Belize is pretty low, I think, but if you are super scared, take insect repellant with deet and use it every time you go out. Also wear sunscreen- apply sunblock first then repellant on top of that. If you are afraid of being mugged, be smart - keep valuables hidden in a pouch inside your clothes, or if you have a purse keep it on you very close to your body at all times when in public. Don't act like an idiot tourist in public to make yourself a target - people who would mug or kidnap are looking for easy targets - women travelling alone or someone who looks like they aren't aware of their surroundings. The water there is supposed to be semi-safe, but my husband got very ill on our honeymoon, so I recommend drinking bottled water only - never from the tap and no icecubes. In case you do get sick, bring some dry packets of electrolytes you can add to water, immodium, pepto, ibuprophen etc in your toiletry/first aid kit. I used to work for a travel company... Belize is a pretty easy place to travel but you just have to be a smart traveler!

Don't go at all.

stay in groups, don't go off alone anywhere. You'll be fine with bugs, and if you're that scared of the water just drink soda, they have plenty down there.

Just stay close to a good friend and read books or occupy yourself to rid of these irrational fears
