Looking for a name of a Fruit in Colombia????

The outside is orange and is easily cracked open. The inside looks like a Polmagrante but a brownish yellow color. Does anyone know the name?

It certainly sounds like one of the passion fruits. When I lived in Bogotá, there were 3 different species of passion fruits that we would buy at the market.

1. Granadilla (Passiflora ligularis). This is the only one of the 3 species that we ate fresh out of the shell, instead of preparing as juice. The shell is easily cracked open, and then we eat the seedy pulp with a spoon. The fruit is oblong, nearly round, with a yellow-orange shell. The inside is pale with black seeds in the pulp.

2. Maracuya (Passiflora edulis). This fruit, which is originally from Brazil, is used to prepare a juice. We always prepared the juice with water, not milk. The fruit is similar in shape to the granadilla, but the color of the shell can vary from yellow to red. This is the species that is used for passion fruit juice in most other parts of the world, such as Hawaii.

3. Curuba (Passiflora mollissima). This is a highland species, native to the tierra fria lands of Colombia. The fruit is much more slender and softer than the granadilla, yellow or yellow-green on the outside, and pinkish on the inside. We used the fruit to make juice, always with milk, not water. I often saw the vines grown as ornamentals in the Bogotá area, because of their beautiful pink flowers. However, the vines are quite vigorous, and can take over an entire wall.

The general name that is commonly used for this family of fruit in Latin America is marancuya, in CR and Bogota I think that Granadilla is used for those of the group that are orange.
