I was there for 4 weeks a couple of years ago. It is a delightful place to visit. Yes some areas are definitely better than others depending on your preferences. My favorite of all areas by far was San Gerardo de Dota and also Cerro de la Muerte. Both high up in the mountains and de Dota is eternal spring time. Muerte is somewhat cold during the evening but pleasant during the day. Monteverde is where most tourists like to go. Also Volcan Arenal. I did not get to Arenal but Monteverde is a very nice place with lots of birds to see there, even right in town. A cab driver will drop you off and pick you at all the places you wish to go for very reasonable rates. We used the same cab all the time we were there. Sort of like having personal transportation. I just wished that I had stayed there longer and had the opportunity to see more places. The bus service is excellent and inexpensive, but the buses can be very crowded--standing room only.
Would I recommend it. Absolutely and whole heartedly. I do not know if I would move there but I did meet quite a few Yankees who did move there. There are quite a few gringo colonies in Costa Rica. There are also quite a few gringos who live amongst the Costa Ricans. They country is very friendly, but San Jose can be rather daunting to a gringo who does not speak very good Spanish. There are no street signs and it is difficult to find ones way around town. Even the cab drivers have their moments. The cab drivers in San Jose are not among the more honest of folks either. We had to get out of one cab when he refused to meter the fare. La maria, por favor is a necessary phrase to learn. That means turn on the meter. |

I would definitely recommend visiting ... Costa Rica should be on anybody's short list of places to see.
As for moving to Costa Rica, you should spend time in-country and do allot of research prior to making this a serious consideration (ie: residency requirements, ability to be employed if necessary, etc.).
If you really want to experience Costa Rica I recommend spending two weeks exploring. Depending on your needs/wants you can spend very little by using reliable public transportation and inexpensive hotels/hostels -or- join some of the many pre-planned tour experiences with your choice of travel and hotel options.
I have been visiting and experiencing the native Costa Rica (non-tourist) for 10 years and finally made the move early 2008.
My experiences are chronicled at Costa Rica Blogger (http://www.CostaRicaBlogger.com). You are cordially invited to review my own adventures toward a more complete understanding of what you might expect. |

I live in Costa Rica, but I am originally from Canada. It is one of the most beautiful countries I have ever been to.
It has a tropical climate so it will be pretty hot all year round. You will find it very humid in some areas. The only place that is colder is the Central Valley (San Jose, Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago). But it depends greatly on the time of year you come. I would recommend you to come to Costa Rica in the months of December, January and February, specially if you want to visit Guanacaste (famous for its beaches).
Some places to go are:
-Rincón de la Vieja National Park
-Cerro de la Muerte
-Arenal Volcano (a must see, the most active volcano in Costa Rica)
-Tenorio National Park and you will see the famed RÃo Celeste.
-Palo Verde National Park if you like seeing birds.
-If your in to surfing Playa Grande and Playa Tamarindo
-If you would like to be on a nice private beach Playa Cabuyal
-If you would like to watch turtles laying eggs you can watch them at night at certain times of year at Playa Grande.
-Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve if you like hiking through cloud forests.
There are lots of places to see and for all likings. So if I can help you in any way please just ask.
