I have been three times and my brother and his wife moved there last year. It depends on how much you want to spend on the rooms. Most rural cities have rooms called Cabinas that you can rent for as little as $5 per person per night. Just get off the bus at any city and ask anyone where the cabinas are located and they will point you in the right direction
I would visit La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio while there. These are two of my favorite places.

I would suggest a beach hotel for part of it, then a rainforest hotel with hot springs under a volcano. Do a search under Costa Rica Resorts.
