Machu Picchu info needed? |
My boyfriend and I are thinking of doing the Inca Trail... what does it entail (maybe a 2 day one)... where do you trek from and to (Would it be from Cuzco?).
And where do you sleep in Machu Picchu? Would it be camping or would you have to stay in Aguas Calientes? or somewhere else? Additional Details Oh and also, who can you book the trek with? I'm in the UK but will be in Chile for a while from the end of this month so I can book it here or in Chile |

hi
if you want to do a 2day inca you take the train from Cusco at 630AM
then you et of at mile 84 about 3 hours later.
you will hike for about 6-8 hours and get to MP at 4 or so.
Then you stay overnight in Aguas Calientes.
At 6AM the next the day is when you go to MP..
great time to go.. little tourists.
also.. go up Huayna Picchu when you are there.
we used www.sunriseperu.com for all our treks.

It is amazing! If you have time I would recommend the 4 day trek. You have to book in advance as they only allow a limited number of people on the trail on any one day so you don't want to be disappointed. I would book from here just so you have it sorted. Arrive in Cusco in advance as you will need to get acclimatised to the altitude (sickness can really throw you!). When you do the 4 day trek you tend to camp. They provide porters who carry most of the most of the stuff and put the tents up and cook meals etc. MAkes you feel guilty having such a luxury! After 4 days when you arrive at MP it feel bloody amazing!! ENJOY!
Make the most of S America!! |

It is such an amazing treak, you are sure to have a wonderful time.
How long it takes is really up to you and your preferences. Here is a web site that has some decent information on Machu Picchu and links to information on how to arrange a tour from Cusco:
http://www.vivatravelguides.com/south-america/peru/cusco-machu-picchu-and-the-sacred-valley/machu-picchu-and-the-inca-trail/machu-picchu-overview
I hope it helps! Have a great trip. |

My first point - definately do it, the Inca Trail is amazing and the best way to get to Machu Picchu. We did it last year in June and it was simply fantastic.
Ours was four days and before you think it, I'm not mega fit, just average, and I dont do that much in the way of trekking. However, it was an afternoon of walking on day one, about 8am to 1pm on day two, most of the day on day three and a few hours early morning on day four. So don't think you'll be walking for twelve hours every day. Also there are porters to take all the gear for you so you only need a day pack each day - yes, those porters are amazing.
The two day trek usually starts at km 104 (a station on the train line from Cuzco to Machu Picchu) and goes to Aguas Calientes which is the town nearest to Machu Picchu. Its basically one day of walking and the second is spent at Machu Picchu. There's heaps of companies offering this I would just go with a travel agent you're comfortable with.
If you want to do the full Inca trail I can recommend Tucan Travel, we travelled with them for six weeks and they were great. see www.tucantravel.com.
There is no accomodation in Machu Picchu itself, you would probably stay in Aguas Calientes. If you were to do the full Inca Trail there is a camp site a few hours walk from Machu Picchu where you would stay so you can make the sungate by sunrise. |

There are only 2 existing treks: a 4d/3n trek that cost like US $ 300 per person and a 1 day trek that gives you an outside view of Macchu Picchu but you have to go to Aguas Calientes for the night and then the morning after to go inside Macchu Picchu.
Aguas Calientes is a 10 minute ride to Macchu Picchu, buses go there every 10 minutes from 6 am, while the train from Cuzco arrives around 10 am - 10:30 am. I would recomend to take the 1 day trek, stay the night at Aguas Calientes (they have a hot spring swimming pool up to 10pm, many good restaurants and pubs) then go to MP early in the morning and have enought time to climb the Wayna Picchu mountain.
I know that you have to book the 4d/3n trek 45 days and I guess it's the same with the 1 day trek. The problem is that when you search on the internet, you'll only find all you want for more money.
My advice is to look for a hotel in Cuzco (not so expensive) and make contact with them to get the best offer on the Inka Trek, etc. Because they deal with the agencies directly. |
