First and foremost. WHERE in Colombia? Next what "estrato' is his family? If he has a good job there and you are going to "organize" (get married, or similar) Are you ready to go to Colombia and stay? Does he want to come here?
SA is a very matriarchal society. Bring something for his mom. Again, depends on where and how he lives. If he is estrato 3 or 4, a small microwave (if you can cram it in your suitcase) would be cool. If hes estrato 6 or higher (say he lives in Bogota way above Septima) and his family drinks, a good single malt whiskey (Buchanans 18 year old for example) Things like the lip gloss and lotions from Victorias Secret are very popular there and the lip gloss you pay 5 bucks for here costs over 20 there.
Just be yourself. It's obvious you are madly in love with this guy. but dont let love make you blind. Watch how he treats his mom and his grandmother (no doubt but what youll meet all of the family) That's how hell treat you.
Think with your head. Not your heart.. At least not the first time you go. |

The fact you are Caucasian doesn't mean anything, around 40 % of the population in Colombia are Caucasian so there is a lot of ethnic diversity in Colombia. Just behave normally, do not care about their nationality. And buying a gift for them is probably a good idea. |

Okay, Colombians are great bunch of people. I was in the exact same position as you, just it was me going to meet her family. Learn some Spanish before you go, this will impress them. Colombians love to meet new people so it will really help if you can speak a little bit.
Definitely take a gift, bring something that they cannot get here (I live in Colombia now) Do not bring Starbucks coffee! but maybe some sweets, most Colombians have a sweet tooth and like to try new things. Depending on where you are going try to learn a little bit about the city, so you can tell the parents that you would like to see some of the things. Colombians are really proud of their country so showing an interest will definitely get you extra points.
I always refer to my in laws as señor and señora, most of the time. When you first greet them it is nice to use those words as it shows respect. They will probably tell you to call them their actual names after, but it is a nice thing to do.
Hope this helps, just becareful when you get here, warn your family you may not go back, if your like me you will love it! |

Just be yourself, most ppl in SA have this idea of American girls being open minded attitude. They are going to be very nice to you, they are going to spoiled you, I am not sure if language is going to be a barrier, but they will try to please you in any way they can. As far as bringing them a gift, I do no think is necessary but a little something it does not hurt. Try to learn some spanish words, so they can see that you are interested in learning a little spanish. |

Just be yourself and they'll be very nice to you. Colombians are usually very welcoming and warm.
As for judging you for being a gringa, I'll tell you the truth, don't ask them anything dumb like if they have drugs or whatever, because they'll think that you're ignorant. i'm not saying that americans are ignorant, but, like a lot of americans have that stereotype for colombians of being violent and into drugs, colombians think that most americans are ignorant-(i know that this is not true)
remember that there are some cultural differences too, for example, where i live in colombia men shake hands and women air-kiss once on the cheek to say hello. try to know a few spanish words and they'll be impressed.
hope you have a good trip, you're going to love colombia. |

TAKING THEM A GIFT IS CERTAINLY A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION....IT SHOWS YOUR THOUGHTFULNESS FROM THE GET-GO. SOUTH AMERICANS ARE VERY PRO-U.S. SO NOT TO WORRY THERE. YOU WILL MOST LIKELY BE MORE ACCEPTED AND LOVED THAN IN ANY AMERICAN HOUSEHOLD. |

of course not...maybe in many TV programs said that colombia is a bad country and we hate the strangers and "gringos" as you said but the truth is that we allways have a smile for everyone ...it´s truth that some people are bad but we love the people who visit the country ...i would recoment that you have to be nice , we like to be loved too so give them a kiss (not in the mouth ) make them laught with funny histories , learn about the country and abut the colombian people.....
i wish you so luck |
