Mexico or Panama to learn Spanish...?

Hola!
I'm doing a 1 year abroad study when I start university
I want to go to Latin america, I am studying Travel & Tourism but want to use it as a chance to improve on my Spanish also

I'm considering either Mexico or Panama
Does anyone know, have any idea or suggestions on which country would be best? Or if neither, which county you would suggest?

Gracias!
Additional Details
I have only studied Spanish for a year, so I would basically be starting from the very basics

Panama. You see more of Central America from there. The Spanish is much more castellano than Mexico. Mexican Spanish, unless spoken by a very well educated person is harsh and hard on the ears. AND if you learn Spanish there.. Every other latin american country will THINK your a Mexican NOT a good thing. Panamanian accent is harder to divine. Ditch Mexico. Go Panama. And as for Spain the speak Spanish with a lisp and sound totally gay. Go elsewhere.

Panamá is better than Mexico (to learn english)
if you want lo learn a neutral accent --> Colombia(Bogotá)

What is your Spanish language goal? If you want to use Spanish in the U.S. then Mexico is definitely the place for you since Mexican Spanish is definitely the dominant Spanish spoken in the U.S.. However if you are wanting a more neutral Spanish I am not sure Panama is the best place for you either--even though it is more neutral than Mexican Spanish the accent is strong like that in Cuba or the Colombian Coast. .

Colombia (Bogota) and Costa Rica have the most neutral accents and the latter has a more developed tourist industry than Panama. I would look into Costa Rica as an alternative to Panama, climate is also a bit better and the food is a lot better.

Panama is a small country and there is only so much to do there, but its tourism industry is just taking off--that could be a plus for you.

Mexico has a lot of climates many of which are more comfortable than Panama which (except for Volcan and Boquete) extremely hot and muggy. Panama (with the exception of Colon) is much safer than Mexico however and it is probably cheaper to live there than either Costa Rica or Mexico. Mexico has a lot of interesting cultures, Panama has fewer and most people live in Panama City, a city that is trying to look like Miami.

Mexico has a lot more variety of culture and places to visit. Mexican cuisine is clearly superior to Panamanian.

So before I can give you a more definitive answer, I would need to know more about what you want to do and what your criteria for selection are before I could give you a definite recommendation.

Panama. I've noticed that many mexicans don't speak as good as other Latin American countries. No offense. I have Mexican friends. To learn Spanish you have to be with people who really speak it correctly. Many latinos have told me that Colombian Spanish is really good, but I don't know if you want to go there. I'm sure in every country there are people who don't speak the language properly, especially in the US. Costa Rica is a very good option. I know people who have been there, the accent is pretty neutral. Costa Rica is probably even better than Panama.

Mexico is an amazing country, I'd love to go there for an whole year. Although there are dangerous parts (mainly in the north where all the trouble is happening right now) everything is so beautiful there. The weather, beaches, people & culture is just breath taking..... I also want to learn spanish - I envy you!!

If I were to choose between Panama and Mexico I would pick Mexico. Panamenos talk really fast and sometimes I cant understand them, there's also there accent. Mexicans talk diferently depending on where they are from but they pronounce every letter in each word. The best country to learn spanish is either from Peru or Colombia(My pick).

Amazingly there are 27 difference forms of Spanish. I would suggest Venezuela.

Mexican, and I know people will argue, is not a very good Spanish.

Mexico is a lovely country, but they also have a heavy accent, not to mention the fact that some cities have become rather dangerous to the cartel turf wars.

I suggest going to Panama. However, if you are looking for a 'neutral' accent Costa Rica and Colombia are better options. (Yes, Colombia IS getting safer.)

The largest chunk of latinos at CNN EN ESPAÑOL are Colombians. I think the reason is that they are easier to understand as their register is clearer.

i'd say Panama although you may benefit better going to Peru or Colombia. In mexico the spanish can be more slang and different than say in Latin America unless you plan on being in the U.S as there is a huge! Mexican population. Now if your to go to Cuba or Puerto rico its more slang and the accent is very strong as said by other people on this post the Colombian accent is very netural I have many friends with colombian backgrounds. As someone who has grown up with Cuban parents I have seen the differences in the accents. Good luck have fun learning spanish cuidate mucho! besos.

Panama, most certainly! As a vacation destination, it was amazing. Is it someplace I would want to live for a year? Yes!

This perspective might help you decide....

I took 3 years of Spanish in high school - I graduated in 1972, so quite a few years ago. I went to Panama for 3 weeks in 2008 and after about a week there, I was able to understand enough of what was being said that I could follow along....and I was able to use the vocabulary that I had learned to converse adequately. Plus - many many people there speak "American" due to our having had a constant presence there for so many years.

And - they use the dollar as monetary system.

And - you can drink the water anywhere in that country with no problems.

Truly a great place to spend a year and I wish I could go along with you!

mexico is really pretty but has gotten really dangerous, with the drug lords fighting for power nad the goverment declaring them the war.

Why don't you consider Costa Rica or Guatemala instead, beautiful places with lots of fun things to do and amazing sites.
