Mexico to El Salvador. Should i do it alone? |
I was born in El Salvador but now live in Australia. I am returning back to my homeland for the first time in 5 years and the first time by myself. I am planning on staying for 3 months. I'm a 21 year old male, and speak fluent spanish.
I was thinking about possibly going to Mexico City and working my way down through Belize, Guatemala and Honduras, before eventually reaching El Salvador (estimated the trip to take me 1 month max)
Although i have put alot of thought into doing this trip, i am still not sure about traveling by myself. I will not be driving, but rather taking normal buses and taxis. I wish to see the Aztec and Mayan ruins.
I have spoke to some family members in El Salvador, and they have told me that it would be best for me to go staright to El Salvador and then make my way up and around the surrounding countries. Or to take direct city buses from Mexico City to Belmopan to Guatemala City and then to San Salvador. What should i do? Is it safe to do it alone? |

como estas paisano!!
well I was born in new york, but my parents were both from el salvador, so i basically have "sangre salvadoreña." :)
if you ask me, it sounds like a pretty big trip...i advise you to go with the accompaniment of someone, or as your family members said, take public transportation. I'm sure it would be beautiful to tour around mexico/central america by yourself, but at night, you can find yourself in alot of trouble and you wont have anyone to (immediately) aid you.
And as much as i love el salvador, there are many parts where the neighborhoods are very rough, and (as you may know) there are many people desperate looking for a way to get money, no matter what manner that would be, especially if you have nice clothes on. this applies not only to el salvador, but the other countries as well.
if you do decide to go by yourself, be very careful and i wish you a safe trip, but i advice you to take your family's advice :)
buena suerte, amigo! |

Don't do it, compa! My dad drives at least once a year to El Salvador going through Mexico down through Guatamala and into the Motherland. Everysingle time he does this, he gets robbed, has to pay off an exorbanent amount of money to the local police and gets into fights with kids jumping in his car at a light to find something to quickly grab and dash away with. And thats only in Mexico. Guatamala is just scary. You just drive. Don't stop. You start as early as you can and you get through it fast. He can't even relax until he gets to El Salvador.
I very much believe you should have somebody accompany you on your travels. Ya, it might slow ya down a little bit, but its worth it. |

I am a white American male and I spent over a year in the area when I was 20 and 21 and never had a problem. The trip is as safe as things get in Central America. Go for it and have a great time, El Salvador is a beautiful country. I can't wait until the end of May when I get to go back! |

You shouldn't do the trip alone, it's not that safe, not only for El Salvador but for the other countries also maybe just excluding Belize.
In Guatemala you could see a lot of beautiful places, like Antigua Guatemala, Peten and the Mayan ruins; in El Salvador, the beaches and mountains are amazing, and in Honduras and Mexico you have a lot to see.
I personally recommend to begin your trip in Mexico and finish it in El Salvador, but for sure, you shouldn't do it alone! |
