Why is it these arm chair travelers who don't know a thing about it keep running off their mouths about how dangerous, dirty and awful Central America is? I am a gringo living in Honduras and have visited, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and El Salvador. Yes, all of these countries are poor, sometimes lack infrastructure etc, etc., but that doesn't prevent them from being a good place to live.
Nicaragua is just as safe as you want it to be. You can probably get into trouble easier in your Canadian city if you are stupid.
What you should know covers hundreds of topics and you will learn as you go. Many people speak at least a little English and you will pick up Spanish as you go along. It is a small problem.
You can spend days or weeks on the Caribbean or Pacific coastal beaches, fishing, diving, surfing, girl watching, or days and weeks sightseeing the volcanoes, and cloud forests with their flora and fauna. The cities don't necessarily compare with those in Canada but do have quite a bit to offer. Do a little research on the net. There are dozens of sites where you can learn more about the country. |

French Fries,
Nicaragua is like any other Central America Country.
It has it's advantages/disadvantages. It is a beautiful country to live in but keep in mind if you are used to all the luxury such as: movies theater + traffic + etc
You'll find a few of these things over in Nicaragua.
Yes, it is a dangerous country to live but it all depends on how you perceive to others. If you are well-dress + carry jewelries + nice cars + etc. People will come after you because all of these.
But if you are down to earth and introduce yourself as a nice person to wherever you are going to live in, they won't bother you.
There are so many places you may want to visit (believe me you'll enjoy them all) but go with someone you trust and someone who knows where to take you.
There are some beautiful beaches + little towns + volcanoes + city is total different from what you are used to + people + language + Food (omg) + others....
There are a few people in Managua who really knows how to speak English and will help you.
If more info, simply ask :-) |

Nicaragua is actually statisticaly the safest country in Central America, it holds the second lowest number of homicides in Latin America. The most common form of "danger" is petty theft.
You should know that Nicaragua is a very poor country, but it is extremely blessed with natural beauty and nature.
There is much to do here. Clubbing, starting a business, traveling within the country, ect.
Many people speak English in Managua, as it is required to learn. English is more prevalent in the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, where it holds an official status (next to Spanish and other Indigenous languages). |

I don't know why people seem to think that every country in Latin America is like undeveloped or prehistoric. There are cities there too!! And like it or not they are civilized, although there considerately poorer. It is safe... I mean, it's not like there's a beast that's gonna eat you or anything like it. They are just like everyone else in the world. There is probably a lot of people who speak English down there, it's like Mexico. |

1. No, it is not safe.
2. They are really poor and carry diseases that can lead to death.
3. Nothing except being bit by bugs and running in mud.
4. Hardly anyone speaks English there. |

Nicaragua is one of the most dangerous countries according to UN. Most of the people is poor and the country has a miserable economy. The only city is Managua, which is the the capital, and it looks like a village. The population has a basic education most of them don't speak English. The country has a lack of infrastructure, so there is no much to do in the urban areas. I am not sure about the natural landscape, but it is near Costa Rica so it must has something nice. The political situation is terrible, they have an idiot as president, who is the puppet of Chavez in Central America. So to conclude, stay in the glorious Canada and keep away of Nicaragua. |
