Moving to bogota columbia with 3,000 american dollars?

Im 19 years old and I want to move to bogota, columbia. would I be able to find an apartment when I move down there and be able to live in it long enough till I find a job? I have only completed high school but I just want to start a new life there. does this sound unreal or could I make it happen?

3000 usd is about 7,000,000 pesos. To get a real job you need a work VISA and a cedula. (Natl Id card) The minimum wage in Colombia is about 500,000 pesos. Roughly 250.00 a month. Very hard to live on that. You can teach English but you have to know some Spanish.. Otherwise how are you going to communicate with your students? The only other thing I could suggest is to go there make some connections and import stuff. For example, Victoria's Secret stuff is very popular but very spendy maybe 2x or 3x what it costs here. Current electronics are also popular -Iphones for example - but are harder to import and if the catch you at aduana.. you get to pay taxes on them. Car parts are another thing that costs 5X what they cost here. also check out www.metrocuadrado.com this is a good place to get an Idea how much an apartment will cost. Also some barrios are more dangerous than others. We have an apt in La Calleja baja that is about 2000 Square feet and it costs about 3,00,000 pesos a month. Good luck.

You need to do a little prior research my friend. Foreigners can't even work in Colombia, or most Latin Countries, without a work visa or a residency and even then only if they can provide a skill that cannot be supplied by the local population. Teachers, administration officers, or other professional people are usually granted work visas. To stay continually in Colombia you will have to obtain a residency and your three thousand dollars will likely not last until all of the paper work is completed. It may be good if you were to visit the country for a month or two. While making sure you have enough money to get back home, spend some time looking, investigating and making sure that is really what you want to do.

Edit: Do you speak Spanish? The suggestion that you teach English would only work if you are fluent in Spanish.

Well, first of all, the country is called Colombia and not Columbia.

I don't think it is possible for you to achieve what you want.

First of all, I assume that you do not speak Spanish, which is essential to finding a job in a Spanish speaking country. In addition to that, you will not be able to find a job with a decent salary without a college degree.

3000$ might suffice to cover your living costs for a while, a month or two, depending on how well you manage money. Finding an apartment is difficult and I would recommend you to find one before you leave the warmth of your home and depart to unknown territories. I assume that you do not have a residential visa, nonetheless, I don't think that is the most challenging part of your plan.

Btw, I assume that you are taking into account the fact that plane tickets to travel down to Colombia are not handed out for free in cereal boxes.

Why don't you try going there during the summer to see whether you like it?

If you really want to move out of the US, I would recommend you to move to a developed country because being broke in developing countries is tough.

$3000 US.......jajajajajajajaja.
To move into an apartment in a nice area they want you to put 18,000,000 pesos into a bank CD or own some land in Colombia.

You could live down south but I hope you weigh 300 lbs so you can beat up the people trying to rob you at knife point.

I make 100k US + and barely get by after rent, utilities, and send some money to in-laws.

Better you get an education and have a better goal in life.

good luck

It's a good idea but you could start off by spelling the name of the country right: it's Colombia. Most people confuse it with Columbia because it's basically the same pronunciation. But it's still a mistake, fortunately you made it now and not while being there ;)

Don't worry about finding a job: you could teach English (just for being a native speaker potential students will flood your mobile line wanting lessons), and if you want to get in college you could also find some good inexpensive ones with great syllabi.
