Hi Shanny,
On one of my trips to Costa Rica, almost all the airplane passengers were students traveling with classmates for a visit to this beautiful Central America country. My brother-in-law is a Spanish teacher in an Illinois high school and he takes his students to Costa Rica every other year.
As you can tell, Costa Rica is a popular student destination due to the fact that it is generally a safe place to visit.
That said, like visiting any place you are unfamiliar such as any major U.S. city (ie: Chicago, New York, etc.) you need to be aware of your surroundings, stay with your classmates, etc. Your safety always begins and ends with you and your good decisions (wow - do I sound like a father ;o).
As for the animals: Costa Rica is chock-full of amazing and beautiful wildlife … but a good guide is highly recommended. The best time of day to see most wildlife is early morning. Sunrise in Costa Rica is approximately 5:00am year round. As soon as the mid-morning sun starts to beat down most animals take to the shelter of the forest until dusk, which is between 5:00pm and 6:30pm depending on the time of year.
I invite you to view the wildlife pictures within my "Animals of Costa Rica" album at http://BienvenidosCostaRica.dotPhoto.com.
Other information and pictures are also available on my blog "Costa Rica Blogger" - you and your classmates may find some of the information helpful as you prepare for your trip!

San Jose blows, but the rest is cool. They have sloths, monkeys, sea turtles, toucans, etc. Check out a travel book or some websites. A lot of it is American centric so you can get by with US dollars and english. |

Costa Rica is probably the safest country in Latin America, just like any city you´ll maybe stray dogs and birds. There is a variety of wildlife in the national parks, however even in the parks you would be very luck to see anything larger than a monkey since animals avoid humans being afraid of the noise.
As for other dangers, bear in mind Costa Rica has no army, and is a prime tourist destination. |

Costa Rica is VERY safe. The fact that your HS is planning a trip there should tell you that. Schools have to be very careful where they take their students for safety and insurance purposes.
There are lots of animals in Costa Rica...depending on where you go. Monkeys, sloths, you name it...Much of Costa Rica is a rainforest and because of that there is a lot of wildlife. But don't worry, a lion is not going to jump out from behind a bush and eat you for dinner...that's not the type of wildlife I'm speaking of.
There are also bugs...not like they're swarming around you or anything, but remember...you are in the RAINFOREST.
It really is a beautiful and safe country. On my many (and I mean many) stays to Costa Rica I've come across lots of HS and college travel groups. It is very popular for this sort of thing.
Good luck and have fun! |

Hey my college does the same type of trip if your planning on majoring in spanish. They study abroad in Costa Rica and they also go to Spain. Im planning on going to Costa Rica this summer with the program, my professor got me sold on the idea. She said the sites are amazing, and all the natural life you are surrounded by is like no other. Right outside the dorms I will be staying at she said there is a erupting volcano that goes off every night that you have a top view of, no to scare you ahaha. But if you like the outdoors and like wild life and trying new things then I say go, its a once in a life time opportunity! |

Definitely go. Costa Rica is wonderful for a visit. If I was moving I might pick Colombia or Peru as my preferences. |
