nope, he'll have to get a very expensive international plan, that most of the time doesn't work. Or go to any ICE offices and get a new phone with the new plan. ICE sucks!!!!! we are waiting for private companies to come and build everything from scratch.

Or ask him to buy a prepay phone card, $10 goes a long way and then he can give you a call anything he's close to a phone, in the hotel, public phone, house, etc.

I traveled to Costa Rica in March 07. At the time I was told by verizon (two separate occasions) that yes, my cell phone would work and I could make and receive calls. When we arrived in San Jose, I found out my phone would not even tell me a time, let alone could I make or receive calls. Hopefully your friend will take advantage of the guy selling phone cards by the baggage claim. Very cheap and easy to use. You could also get a phone card to call your friend where they are staying.

yeah you will be able to talk to them, but whomever their cell phone provider is are going to charge them crazy amounts of money for the international call.

The only reason to bring your phone is for conveniences, so can use it at the airports when in the States, otherwise it is worthless in Costa Rica. So unless your friend has an international calling card, forget it. And even with that, it will be very expensive to call.

Sorry, it might be best for your friend to rent a cell phone

My last land line to CR was 2 min @ $12 bucks per min.....won't do that again........
