My husband and I want to move to Costa RIca to teach English. Is it too risky to find a job once we get there?

We want to get our TEFL here in California, and are planning on moving in the late summer. It seems a little scary to pick up and go without a job, but most organizations that train you to teach English here don't set you up with jobs in that specific country. Is it easy enough to find a job and an apartment within the first month of being there?

First, the new in migration law is harder, in order to come here and be a resident you and your husband have to prove really good income in the states. Our country welcome tourists and business people of around the world, or high profile careers that are not available in our country.

Second, our education system is really high, like the U.S. 50 years ago, even our public schools are better than the ones in the states. Here the schools still teaches maths, science, geography, etc, not liberals trying to rewrite history or brain watch our kids with liberals ideas.

Third, our government protects the middle class jobs for our people.

What happen with California? the democrats finally broke the state? too much well-fare? huh? too much High taxes from Nancy Pelossi? When are going to wake up?

A lot of costaricans thinks that U.S. is a Disneyland park, I wish can show my country the reality, and how lucky we are, and how hard we have to protect our country.

One thing is to welcome tourists in a very friendly way, and another one is to come here and take away jobs from us.

Perhaps, you want to reconsidered to moving here :)

Also, I heard than the education in the U.S. is really bad. So, why we would want teacher from your country.

You'll need an attorney ($$$) to help you with the docs, even before come here. Then, the new in migration law is very hard, you'll need to prove good income, in order to show to our government that later you won't try to apply for a job here.

The middle class and under jobs are protect by our government for our people. But, you can bring money into our country, make a business and hired some locals, and then apply for temporary residence.

The life is harder here, if you are not a visitor.

You can find an apartment.......a job.......gonna be a little harder.....like where in CR.....If you have enough money to last a year or so you may be ok.......but don't count on it......you need to have someone you can trust to help you.......watch out tons of SCAMS out there.........

Often times when people just "up" and move without spending any time in Costa Rica become very disappointed. There are requirements for working in Costa Rica. You must obtain a work permit first and this can take 30-60 days to process. There are also other ways of obtaining employment by volunteering your services. You can also live in Costa Rica if you can prove at a minimum of $2,000 USD monthly income. With that, you can establish your own business, but you must hire Costa Ricans to do the work and your position is that of management only. You could also apply on an individual basis for a temporary work permit from businesses based in Costa Rica. Teachers are an allowable profession. But, this does not apply to accompanying family members, so it has to be individual applications. Apartments are not hard to find. Here is a website that you can get all kinds of information from and contact them for more help with your relocation.

Hi, it is very funny because it´s easier for you to find a job in costa rica than find a job in costa rica for people from costa rica.
You can ask for help in the American Embassy

Getting an apartment is fairly easy and in some cases you can rent them online. Below is a list of rental agencies that will give you an idea of what is available.

However getting a job can be a nightmare unless you already have one lined up. Best is to secure employment first before moving down. This way your employer can start doing the paperwork for it (you need a work permit).

In some cases they will find lodging for you until you get settled in

Here is a link of a company that is always looking for English teachers and they give their requirements
