Here is a link to a yahoo group for people interested in Costa Rica. I have found this type of group to be very helpful. You can join the group easily, post your questions, then others reply. usually there are a lot of knowledgeable people in the group. I live in Mexico, and have found the yahoo group great for answering questions.
Just saw the other answer. I think this person has a very limited view. I have friends who have visited there frequently and plan to retire there, and I know there are many Americans and Italians retiring there. I have been told the people are happy , friendly, sure they are poor, but Costa Rica is gorgeous and in a great period of growth. DO get lots of other opinions!

Costa Rica has the highest literacy rate in Central America. Due to an article in the constitution the country does not have a military. It is a beautiful country, nice people, many things to do and see. San Jose is a large city and has rough parts as do most capitol cities. You need to decide if you want to live in a big city, on the coast or perhaps in the forest. Take some time and visit the country, it is much cheaper than the USA or Europe, spend a month and explore. A very diverse place with jungle and rainforest, mountains, an active volcano and of course lots of nice coastline. You can see monkeys in the trees or sit out and watch beautiful birds go by for hours. Hiking, rafting swimming, surfing, save a tortoise have an ice cold Cerveza Imperial.

First of all, we are not 20 years behind in medice, because if check, our health system is great, so is education.

I am a Costa Rican and the best piece of advice I can give you is this: just make a trip, visit different areas as a tourist and decide whether you would like to live there. If you like noisy cities visit them. If you prefer rural areas and the country-style way of living, there are many possible places. You may prefer warm areas by the beach, or cold areas up in the hills, or if you prefer to be near secluded beaches, or ...
There are just many many possibilities.

You did not say whether you would require employment if you decided to move to Costa Rica. Which could or could not be a factor. My wife and I have lived her for 12 years and find Cost Rica a great place that is going through a number of changes.

We live in the Central Pacific area on the beach. We prefer this are mainly because of it's beauty and infrastructure (roads, services, etc...). I would suggest that you plan a trip of at least a week or more to see what over 60,000 Americans who reside here have seen.

Having lived in 13 different countries, we find Costa Rica one of the nicest. The people as a whole are great and very helpful. Most Americans live in the San Jose area (Escazu, Rohmessor, Santa Ana, Sabanna) the rest live in Guanacaste (Northern Provence) along the beaches or in the Central Pacific (Jaco to Manuel Antonio).

The greatest part of living here is the ability to employ your self, if needed in just about any type of business. If you speak Spanish and English even better. The biggest headaches you face here are day to day activities - we take for granted - banking, lack of some goods and services and the somewhat manana attitude.

well, that depends on the interest. there is lots of places that have their own uniques and climate, beach or mountain, city or nature. i love zarcero, is up in the mountain and most of the time there is mist around it. also la fortuna by the arenal volcano. jaco beach that is getting populated and is one of the spots surfers go. heredia is a city close to san jose, alajuela and the airport. come and venture around

If you are into the outdoors then you would want to be in Guanacaste which has many great outdoor activities and an outdoor lifestyle.I have a condo in playa del coco,guanacaste and it is great.It generally isnt too much of a tourist destination like Tamarindo,therefore it is much more inexpensive yet still close to a decent size city (liberia is a short 30 minute ride away).
I would stay away from San Jose unless you like cities.It has all the usual city standards.I personally am from new york so when I go to Costa Rica it is to get away from traffic and larg groups of people.

My best friend's abusive husband is Costa Rican so I don't like the men....I know you shouldn't judge one person on a whole place but he's a first class a-hole.

She went to Costa Rica and said it's a jungle and they are 20 years back in medicine and technology. She doesn't want to live there and she has visited. I think most of the men are macho pigs.
