Christa, Peru is very safe right now. Years ago, we had a lot of terrorist activity which was erradicated by President Fujimori. I understand your aprehension as 20 years ago Peru wasnt really safe and it was full of terrorists, but let me tell you that now it is very safe, even safer that places like NY! Just tell your mum to be cautious about her purse and stuff like that. She has tobe careful with pickpocketers, just as she would in any other city in the world. If her family is from Peru, I am sure her family will take her to safe places and be with her all the time. Believe me, Lima is a safe place and provinces are even safer. Your mum will have a great time in Peru and you must come with her whenever you can!

If your mother is going to stay in safe places and with people, there is no problem. She must be cautious about her bag.
Good luck.

If she stays in the nice neighborhoods,it`s Very safe,..but venturing into ' the bad ones ' is unwise. I stayed in Miraflores,Lima for over 3 months. I felt safe enough to walk to the grocery store at 3 AM.

Christa, I am not Peruvian, I even don't speak Spanish and went there. I visited Peru one month ago and believe me it is not so dangerous to go there as you imagine. Everything is depend on where she will live. I've been in Lima and live in very nice district, so-called dormitory area, where I can walk alone even late at night and nothing bad's happened with me. I can't say the same about all districts of Lima, but I just suggest to your mom to fallow simple safety rules in public transport, public places, where there are a lot of tourists, coz of thieves. And if she will be there not alone and there is someone who can help her I am totally sure that everything will be fine. Peru is very nice country with friendly people. I have just positive impressions about this country and gonna back there again. So good luck to your mom with her trip, hope everything will be fine and don't worry!!! :)))))
