Need great sightseeing suggestions in Costa Rica...?

My boyfriend and I are going in late August to Costa Rica to celebrate his 40th birthday and we are looking for personal experiences from everyone to aid in what we hike or drive to see. We are staying the first 4 days in the Arenal Mamoa Resort Hotel and the last 3 days in Fortuna at the Hotel Villa Caletas. We are looking for places to visit and hike to around these areas (waterfalls, suggestions for volcano activity viewing, etc.) Also does anyone have a suggestion on where to rent a 4X4, I have found no real good reviews anywhere.

Thanks!

Thrifty rent a car is the best deal, try on the internet, don't called them in Costa Rica because if you do the reservation with them on the phone is double. If you do it, on the internet they honor the rate with no problem.

If you have a visa, called them and ask if they cover (insurance) a rental car in Costa Rica, so you can save tons of money in stupid fees for insurance from Thrifty.

We go to Costa Rica, every year, we rent a Terios is a 4x4 compact (good in gasoline), and we love it!. We had try several companies and so far, this one have worked perfect for us.

Be careful is not safe like it used to be.

Now: Things you can do:

near the arenal volcano there is a resort called Tabacón, they have heated pools with a swim up bar and hiking to hot springs. along with a spa. it's really nice.... if you want a tour guide, my dad is one down there =]

If you go to Lafortuna, make sure you go to La Catarata de La fortuna. It's a 90 foot waterfall in the jungle and you can swim under it. its amazing. Also, you can go to Baldi or Tabacon hot springs. The water is heated by Volcano Arenal, which you should also visit.

Check out "Rara Avis" they have a website. Stay in the cabins if you go.

I was going to suggeste tabacon hot springs also and there is one just as nice supposedly down the street called Baldi hot springs (at half the price). This summer I will be going to a place outside arenal called rio de celeste, google it, it looks pretty neat with a blue river from all the dissolved minerals
