Nice cheap hotels San Jose, Costa Rica? |
Hi
Please don't send me links to travel websites, I'd like your personal favourites in SJ hotels.
I'd also like to stay in one in the countryside, with quick access to the city, so let's say 20 miles from center tops.
Thanks |

I haven't stayed in that many places and I like comfort too much to go TOO cheap, but here are three that I think offer VERY good levels of comfort and service for very reasonable prices. You can easily shave $20/night off the prices I quote below and find places of similar charm, just perhaps slightly less comfortable, historic, or well situated.
* Hotel Santo Tomas - on the edge of Barrio Amon, a few blocks walk from the Museo de Jade, the Holiday Inn Aurola, etc. The single rooms can be tiny, but doubles are quite comfortable. Attractive courtyard with a small pool, good breakfast. Rates start at $59.
* Hotel Don Carlos - in Barrio Amon, very traditional feeling place with a sense of local artistry and color. Upscale, beautiful property, and with rates starting at just $65, a relative steal of a deal, IMHO.
* Hotel Fleur de Lys - located downtown, a few blocks walk from the National Museum, the Tetro Nacional, etc. Attracts a largely European clientele (not many Americans). Wonderful atmosphere, and their restaurant is very good with free breakfast buffet and excellent Central American cuisine in the evenings. The bar out front is a great place to chill out in the evenings and quite a few guests relax out on the patio with a chilly Imperial. Rates start at $72/night.
And by the way, I *detest* all those hotel booking sites so don't use 'em. The links I give you below can get you to the hotel's OWN web sites so you can get the most accurate direct info and get real contact info.
San Jose can be a fun and interesting place to visit (no matter what the naysayers say).
Have fun!

If you dont have to stay in San Jose itself...don't. Its dirty and dangerous and there is nothing worth seeing that would warrant going out of your way to stay there.
You are much better off staying outside of San Jose' as you mentioned and there are plenty of Hotels 20 miles out that are safe, and located in nice areas.
Forget Guanacaste and the whole concept of flying into Liberia. Guanacaste is B-O-R-I-N-G to say the least, and unfortunatly due to misleading advertising all over the internet, there are quite a few folks that get lured into wasting their Costa Rica visit and vacations in Guanacaste, Tamarindo, Flamingo, Liberia and several other dull and boring locations in the Gunacaste region.
The west central coast of Costa Rica from JacoBeach down to Manuel Antonio offers much better overall Costa Rica vacations!
Good luck wherever you decide to stay, and be safe in San Jose' |

Don't stay in San Jose!
Seriously, there's nothing to see there!
If I were you I'd fly in to the airport in Guanacaste and find a hotel there. There are many small hotels on the beach that are cheap. |

I would recommend checking out BookMe.com... You can compare all the major travel websites in 60 seconds, and only search for the ones you want. Keep checking, and eventually you find a GREAT deal! And they only search reputable/reliable sites, so you won't need to worry about anything.

There are many many hotels all over, it really depends where you want to go.
In San José I would recommend one called Hotel Pitahaya which is small and low cost, breakfast included.
If you want a list of other nice little places you can e mail me at costarica@attorneykearney.com
In San José there are a lot of things to do, of course it is the capital so you will also see parts that are like most cities.
I would recommend going to San José and then visiting other parts of the country and doing a few day tours.
We have a lot of photos on our website.
