Peru must be the country most similar to Mexico considering their Pre-hispanic background, the Spanish conquest and colonization, they were the two main provinces of Spain in America. Comerce between the two regions has existed since way before the comming of the Spaniards.

Atahualpa, the last Inka to rule in Peru fell into an ambush by a greatly outnumbered spanish legion, due to the urge of filling out his curiosity. Ever since a child, he was amazed by tales of the white skinned foreigners with hair on their faces who came on floating houses from very far, etc. etc. Another proof of the comunication between the 2 cultures is the fact that Atahualpa's father, the inka Manco Capac died of smallpox (brought by the europeans) years before any spaniard set foot on Peru.

Similarities:

In both countries people love Chilli Peppers, Bullfighting, Cock fights, hard liquor, beer and soccer.

Peru becomes somewhat different with the inmigration of slaves, first with the africans followed by the chineese. So now you find a diverse ethnical universe inside Peru and they all contribuited to what is considered today as one of the best cuisines for the world to taste. They also contribuited in an unique folklore music and dance.

Mexico on the other hand becomes different due to it's vecinity with United States. Even thought Peru has a lot of "American" influence it is not near to the strong cultural influence Mexico has. In Peru baseball is not practiced, only a few handfull of people, mostly Japanese and Korean descendants. Mexico published comics (Marvel comics for example) just as simultaniously as in the US.

Yours is a very tricky question, one thing you should know about Peru is Diversity, we do have a lot of different cultures here. And being Peruvian and living in Peru most of my life, I'm still far from knowing (not to mention understanding) all aspects of Peruvian Culture.

What part of Peru are your boyfriend from? there are a lot of sub-cultural aspects, traditions, clothing, dances, songs, and even languages depending on what territory you're speaking.

If he's from Lima (capital city) is most likely that he actually doesn't know many Peruvian cultural features, since for a long time people from Lima tend to be underappretiative of other Peruvian cultures, some kind of racism or xenophobia, its sad but its true; ask your boyfriend about the word "cholo" and you'll understand.

What I can say is a little of Jungle area culture, because I'm from there. I was born in Iquitos, unique city, being the only one major city in the word that is completely isolated except by plane or boat, there's no highway, and there are no plan on building one. Name Iquitos comes from the tribe of the Iquitos people, that used to live in that area, most ancient, traditions, costumes, dances, medicines, religius believes, and songs, are from tribes, you can still see some of them tribes descendants perform for turist, but they no longer lives as tribes, no matter what you see. Most ornaments and musical instruments were made or wood or plants products.

On early 1900's there was a huge boom of rubber plant explotation, and lot of people came from all raound the world to profit from it; most aborigens were slaughtered or put in slavery, forced to work till they die. Many awesome constructions remains from those days in Iquitos and other cities in tthe Jungle of Peru and Brazil.

Take a tour to Peru sometime if you can, but I can assure you, unless you have 3 to 4 months, you cannot possibly get to know all of Peru cultures. You'll juts have to make the most important landmarks. But still is an experience you wont forget.

Hope that helped.

Was he born there? When did he come to the US? I came here when i was 9 now i'm 34. I know the basic about Peru but can't really tell you much about life there now. I still have family there, i'm sure he does too. Try to focus on that, maybe you guys can travel there together someday. I go to Peru.com to find out any news around but it's hard to find other sites, there are neighborhoods in Nj/large metropolitan areas where a lot of Peruvian people live but i'm not near them so i'm so out of the loop. No matter what i'm still Peruvian & i still remember the National Anthem from school there. Buena suerte!!!
