Overseas travel. How much money do i take?

I'm going to El Salvador in late November for 3 months. I plan to stay most, if not all the time there with family members. Who, even if i offered, would not accept any money for rent, food etc.

I plan to do a fair bit of shopping while i'm there, both for myself and for family members.

How much money in US dollars would be enough to get me by for 3 months?

I would recommend to take with you close to 1000 per month per person, just for meals cabs and entertainment.

If you plan on doing shopping take a little more depending on how much you will shop.

I do recommend the use of credit cards, however make sure that you have at least cash on hand for any emergency.

Check out the fx rate before you go because you might be cheated by locals on fx change and also be carefull to place your money on different places because if something gets lost or stolen you will have some money on some other safe place.

$1000?

Depends on your lifestyle.
Most financial advisors suggest minimizing the amount of cash you have on hand, and use plastic, but if you'll be staying with family, it should definitely ease the expenses.
When I went to Costa Rica, I figured on at least $100/day for two of us, just for meals.

Three months? $200,000?

It'd be a good vacation

No more than $1500 dollars. And thats high because of your shopping
