well, are you talking about this http://www.recipelink.com/cookbooks/2005/158685433X_2.html ?
Because if it is, its called "arepas", and is different, this is from Colombia.

But if you are talking about this one http://www.saboresdelperu.com/entradas/tamales_maizblanco.htm well, we call this "tamales".

the both are corn meal pancakes...

you can see here http://wemusteat.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html more about the southamerican food.

i'll hope this help you...

Well, I have never eaten, seen or heard of corn meal pancakes in peru, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. there are very thin breads made of corn (or "flatter" breads) that are popular in certain parts of the andes (ayacucho, apurimac).

That's Southern cooking from the US of A I think

If from Peru, they would have a Spanish name

Try flitting through Peruvian Recipes at http://garnet.berkeley.edu/~dolorier/PeruvianRecipes.htm
and/or join the Recipes group at Care2.com where a girl called Tere from Mexico writes about food from every land
