I'm peruvian but I would suggest that you go to brazil mainly for the following reasons:

1.- Is the worst time of the year to go to the mountains, therefore discard Cuzco-Macchu Picchu

2.- Little more than a week is not enough time to visit the 2 countries

3.- February is the time of year that the Carnival of Rio occurs

A non stop flight from New York (JFK) to Sao Paulo (GRU) takes around 9 hr 40 min

I would say Peru simply because I've been there. don't try to go to both if you have only a week or a bit longer, travelling between countries or even within them down there never works as planned, although border crossing tends to be easy (so i've heard. we crossed between ecuador and peru and it was hell, someone stole 50 bucks from us and it took 5 hours to go like 10 miles).
i would say go to peru, but that is a biased opinion. still. go to peru!! lol.

They are both fun! Go to both!

We have family and friends who would show you the city of Macapa if you decide to come to Brazil. The flight from New York to Manaus; Manaus to Belem and Belem to Macapa would be about 11 hours (not including time you will wait for connecting flights.
Not sure how long the flight from NY to Peru is. Both countries require yellow fever vaccine - it's good for 10 years. You must keep the "shot card" with your passport.

I suggest Peru as well, it's a gorgeous country with beautiful sights, but then again so is Brazil, but I'm a little partial to Peru

Both good place to visit, but I suggest PerĂ¹, more thing to see and to do, in PerĂ¹ the vaccine is requested just if you want go in the Amazon
