Peru weather, sights and transportation? |
Hi folks,
I am thinking of going to Peru in August 2007 for honeymoon. Looks like its bad time for beaches but great time for mountains right?
Main concern is - how is transportation around the country? If i fly in to Lima, is there reliable way to get to Cuzco, Machu Pichu, Lake Titicaca by rail or some sort of bus? Or is extra flight only option - maybe costly... I have never been to south america so any suggestions for a good trip and good honeymoon will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Arkadiy |

Hi, my husband and I have a 16 day trip booked to Peru in September. September is the end of their dry season, October begins their rain season however, depending on where you are, Rainforest, Mountain or Ocean weather may differ. I would recommend purchasing a guide book for detailed information, we obtain our info through "Frommer's Peru" guide book. From what we have heard, Lima is very big and the most safe and easiest way to travel within is to fly. I would recommend hiring a tour group to see the sights. After extensive research in the guide books, we went with Tambo Tours, you can reach them via email at: tambo@2goperu.com or via phone1-888- 246-7378, the person we coordinated with is Jason Pomeroy and he is extremelly helpul and will be able to answer all of your questions as well as create an itinerary design specially for what you want to do (that is what he did for us). Some of the hightlights in our trip are: Cuzco, Ollantaytambo, Hiking Sacred Valley to Machu Pichu, Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Ballesta Islands & Nazca lines to name a few. All flights within Peru are included in the cost of our trip. The total cost of our trip, not including airfare from the US to Lima was $2,419 US per person if you paid cash, or $2,542 US if you pay by credit card, plus the cost of the Inca trail permit which you have to reserva ahead of time and that was $150.00 US. I hope this information helps you, if you need any additional information, you can reach me at: hellomarisela@sbcglobal.net Good luck, I hope you have a wonderful honeymoon Ü |

This year is expected to be colder in the mountains compared to other years.
It shouldn't take more than 1 hour or cost more than US$100 to fly anywhere in the country from Lima. Even though, the distance between the capital and Cuzco is not too big, the presence of the Andes mountains makes this trip much longer if you decide to go by ground (Buses can't go fast and have to go around the mountains). For your safety I'd look for travel agencies to make sure you can get to all the places you want to visit without complications.
Have fun. |

i'll go in peru too in July
I heard that Machu Pichu is accesible by plane only which costs 100 and its far from Lima
as for weather, it;s winter there but still not like in North America, its warmer |

I don't know what it is like in August. Probably their Winter.
But I went in late Sept and it was great! Lima was somewhat damp most of the time we were there but Cusco, Lake Titicaca and Machu Picchu were great! Cold, but as long as you have a jacket and a sweater, it's fine. It was sunny too.
I think it's best to get on a tour in a foreign country like that.
Some people speak English but many speak Spanish and Indian dialects. We flew from Lima to Puno(where the tour took us to Lake Titicaca.) We were not on tour for the whole trip, but our hosts booked tours for us in all the towns we visited so I am not aware of the names of the tour agencies
We went by train to Machu Picchu from Cusco. It was a great ride with lovely scenery of mountains, herds of llamas and alpacas. Be sure to have your camera ready!
At the train stop , below Machu Picchu, we boarded a bus that took us halfway up the mountain and then we climbed the rest of the way up. There are steps for the visitors to climb up and the view at the top is breathtaking! It's worth the climb! |
