Peru - why aren't we allowed to mail used clothing to someone in Peru, from Canada? |
A family member returned from a trip to Peru and wants to send good used clothing to the guides there... but on checking Canada Post web site, we are not allowed to. Why not? Anyone know? Additional Details Renato.... well I hadnt really thought of it the way you explain; I myself buy used clothing at a local IODE charity shop in Ontario, and am quite happy with it. But I will pass your views to my daughter as we appreciate any feedback. When she was in Peru last November the guide for the Trek asked the visitors if anyone wanted to leave any (used) clothing behind when they were leaving - and some did - so we thought the guides etc. had no objection. We just wish that she had known "before" the trip to pack an extra bag of clothing to leave there. Maybe one day she will go back and be able to... she loved the people and had a wonderful time. |

It could be for the same reason as Nigeria. I have been attempting business in Nigeria, and it is impossible to send any type of material there. It is to do with narcotics. I am not sure of the exact reason but certainly in Nigeria it is too do with the fact that drugs can be smuggled in, in amongst the fabric. I would guess that this maybe the same for peru, I doubt it is just from Canada, it is most likely for the entire world. The best way to do it would be to speak to the Peruvian border control and explain to them what you want to do and maybe they will have a solution or speak to a charity organization in Peru and maybe they could help arrange it for you. |

your family member wants to help? cool!!, but tell him DON'T BE CHEAP and send new clothing !!!
Why they don't permit sending used clothing? ... dumping, that is the reason. The only way any civilized country would accept used items is if they go through a recognized donation agency, otherwise, it is dumping. |

The only way you can send used clothing to Peru by mail is to send it as "unaccompanied baggage" in which case someone who is traveling to Peru must be the sender, then once he gets here, he's the only one who can claim it.
Why they forbid it? Because for many years this was used as a profitable business that was disloyal to the clothing stores. It doesn't quite fit in the description of dumping, because we're not talking about brand new items, but indeed it has the same effect on commerce.
