You can eat internationally in Caracas (paella is from Spain so I wouldnt put it here). To me the best (or characteristic) food from Venezuela are arepas. |

PabellĂłn (carne mechada, arroz, tajadas y caraotas), arepas, empanadas, cachapas, carne en barra, caraotas (black beans), asado negro, pernil, ensalada de gallina, bollos pelones, etc...
Soups: caraotas, pisca andina, creama de apio, crema de auyama, cruzado de rabo y costilla, mondongo.
Desserts: bienmesabe, arroz con leche, tres leches, quesillo, negro en camisa, braso gitano, huevos chimbos...

We were in Caracas some years ago and went up to the top of the mountain range behind Caracas on an enclosed gondola to a restaurant from which you could see the entire city. We also had arepas, kind of a specialty doughnut which are sold by many small stands called areperas.
On the outskirts of the city people live on the side of steep hills, though they are the worst places to live, they have million dollar views. When it rains, it is truly dangerous, people have been known to fall and slide down the hill to serious injury or death.
Here is a list of other foods:
Soups and Starters
Arepas -
Tostones
Chicken and Cheese Soup
Black Bean Soup
Main Courses
Prawns with Peppers
Pabellon Criollo

arepas, but arepas are not specialty donuts they are made yellow corn called harina pan and resemble the mexican gordita because you can fill it with ham and cheese, tuna, meat, picadillo, cheeze wheez, or white cheese, the possibilities are endless. |

My favorites are:
For breakfast arepas o empanadas. They are both made with corn flour meal (the dough). The arepas can be deep fried of cooked on the griddle. Empanadas, are filled with your choice of cheese, meat, etc. and then deep fried. If you go to the bakeries the typical breakfasts are: cachitos (ham filled baked bread), pastelitos (They look like turn-overs but filled with ricotta cheese, ham, meat, etc. I love those!!!
For lunch, Paella Valenciana (it is a Spanish dish but it is really popular there).
Asado negro (blackend pot roast) It is delightful!! It is usually served with rice and deep fried plantains.
For dinner, cachapas con queso de mano (it looks like a pancake but the batter is made with fresh corn and the cheese is very soft, so it melts to perfection.
Drink some malta...very popular carbonated drink made with barley, and parchita juice (passion fruit juice)
Where to it? well, there are good restaurants everywhere. Some affordable ones are located along Sabana Grande Blvd., Chacaito, Chacao, etc. Some more upscale ones are in Las Mercedes, La Castellana, Sambil mall.
There are also great cafés there where you can eat something quick while you enjoy a cup of coffee. A very good one is Café Olé at Centro Comercial El Recreo.
Buen provecho!!! |
