A "nice place to visit" depends on what you like. If you want a remote out of the way sort of place NYC wouldn't be a nice place at all. Any specifics on what you like to do? Costa Rica is a small country, but it's fairly diverse: Cool mountain towns, hot tropical party cities, bustling major capitol, volcanoes, rain forests, etc. If you ask around for what you're looking for you will probably get more information that you will with "Is this city good".
Limon is a port city on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. It's quite a popular shipping port, but would not be what I would call a "nice" city. The Carnival is a good time to visit for the big party. It's in the beginning of October I believe.
Let me make some suggestions:
Like to party? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaco%2C_Costa_Rica is a fun city (though I am biased as I have moved there). It's a "little big city". Plenty of locals that you'll spot again and again, but always full of vacationers looking to party. If you look like an average Joe tourist, then you'll be perfectly safe. There are occasional problems, but no worse than an average tourist spot in the states. It has the selling point of being close to lots of things. It has the dis-advantage of being more expensive than the rest of CR. I suggest dropping in for a weekend to party at night and you can make day trips to other places depending on your mood. A good flexible choice.
Like something a bit more remote?
Playa Dominical is beautiful for a get away. I live pretty close to it, so I've never had to stay there overnight, but it's one of the most beautiful parts of Costa Rica that I've been to.
Like Nature?
Manuel Antonio is beautiful. Considered a must see stop. There are actually plenty of great national parks in this area (Central Pacific). Costa Rica has 1% of the worlds land mass, but 5% of it's animal species. There are TONS of plants and animals to check out. If you like nature, it's certainly a great place to visit.
General info: You can get away with spending US cash at most places. Bills larger than $20 can be difficult to break though. Any "tourist" type city should have ample places to exchange and ATMs. Most ATMs in Jaco even distribute dollars.

Feel free to IM me. I love Costa Rica, and I'm always happy to give tips on where to go. I've compiled a bit of travel information on my company's web site as well:

It is pretty, but it wouldn't be my first choice. If you want to go to the caribbean side, Cahuita is beautiful. It isn't far from Puerto Limon. Puerto vargas is gorgeous also. The ocean is strong and you probably won't be able to go in it. In fact there are times where people aren't allowed to go in because it is a very strong ocean. |

Limon is a port city with crime problems!
Better off heading a few hours down the coast to Cahuita and Puerto Viejo. |

Are you coming on a cruise ship? There really isn't much to do there. It is largely a run-down port city. However there are lots of things to do within an hour and a half drive (rain forest, rafting, beaches, banana tours, EARTH University etc.) |

The best time to go is during Carnaval. I think it was in October but I can't remember. Other than Carnaval, Puerto Limón doesn't have anything really special. There's not even a beach. Its just hard coral. So travel through to see what its like, or go during Carnaval and have a blast! But if you go another time, Cahuita is supossed to be great. |

I was in Costa Rica for 8 months and I visited puerto Limon twice. I didn't really like it there, too hot, humid, reggae looking people, dirty, but maybe I just didn't fit in.
Some people love it though, it is colorful, with nice beaches, busy as a port and the surroundings are really pretty.
I have a favourite Costa Rica website that I visit for information and things to do, it also has all the regions and what to see n' do while there! I'm sending you the link for Limon.

Have fun, I'm sure you'll love Costa Rica! |
