Puerto Rico or Costa Rica for a honeymoon? |
Hi! My parents have offered to send me and my fiance on our honeymoon this coming July, and we are trying to pick a place to go. We have heard good things about Puerto Rico and Costa Rica. How expensive are they? (Our airfare and hotel will be covered, but we will have to pay for all our food and activities.) Which one is more romantic? What kind of activities does each one have? (I know Costa Rica has beautiful rainforests.) What was your experience with either place? |

I wish I knew Puerto Rico to give you unbiased Info, but I do not.
I live in Costa Rica now, I came here to work for one month in the Osa Peninsula area and I have only gone home to visit since!
In July the whole country is pretty available. There is more rain on the Pacific side compared to Dec- April, but honestly it is nothing too dramatic. Rain comes in the afternoon when you are sufficiently baked and ready for it!
The Caribbean side is better than usual in July-Sept, as it is ALWAYS very rainy there.
On the Caribbean coast I recommend Tortuguero. Tortuguero is where the Green Sea Turtles nest. Thanks to the efforts of this national reserve, the numbers of sea turtles (an endangered species) has risen from 3000 (1980's) to about 20 000 today!

I think that Drake Bay on the Pacific side is a lovely get away for your honey moon. It is accessed via Sierpe by boat through a large Estuary which is home to the largest mangrove reserve in Latin America. There is a really cool island, Isla Del Cano that has great snorkeling.

My son and his wife also considered this option. They chose Costa Rica for their honeymoon and loved it! And it is cheaper in Costa Rica. |

Costa Rica!!!!
I come from Costa Rica and it is beautiful. You can go any where you want and people will me nice to you. You can go to the caves, or to the beaches, or to the volcano, the waterfalls, tropical forest, hotel, museums, little cities, little towns, etc... When you get there you will not know where to go because everything is so natural, and calm, and romantic at the same time. And if you like to PARTY Ticos like to party too, and you can go to restaurants. |

Costa Rica. Lots to do. Pacific coast and Atlantic are both good. Costa Rica is a lot less expensive than Puerto Rico. In Costa Rica, I spent most of my time on the Atlantic side. Warmer waters, great beaches in the South, Tortuguero canals in the north. Steer clear of the city of Limon, and the rest is all good. Snorkeling, surfing, beaches, rainforest tours, etc, etc. |

Well... I am from Puerto Rico and I am going to Costa Rica for my Honeymoon. Puerto Rico is awesome, it depends on what do you want to do. Both have rainforest(Costa Rica is better), activities (Costa Rica has more), Beaches both have some of the best beaches in America. Caves etc
Puerto Rico has some bioluminescent bays, very rare in the world. Old San Juan is nice, and PR has nice lighthouses. Culebra and Vieques have Beautiful beaches.
If you want some ADVENTURE Honeymoon go to Costa Rica. You will see more animals, and will get more involved with Nature. Costa Rica has more biodiversity.
One more thing, is easier to move around PR than CR. Roads are better in PR. And you get faster to places. PR is more like US.
About money, you can end spending pretty much the same either way. If you know Spanish is easier in CR, PR is pretty much the same. That is because you can get to places normal turist normally cant/dont go. That way you get more from the place you are going.
But remember you will find a romantic places everywhere you go, it depends on you and your loved one and how you see them. ;)
Travel cost, depending your hometown they can be very different. Either way, more expensive or cheaper. I can give you some ideas to both places. I know PR pretty well, and i did a lot of research of CR.
I wish you the best. I am going to CR for my Honeymoon in June this year.
Congrats!!!! I know you are excited!!!!! :)
Feel free to email me anytime.
Another thing, VOLCANOES, there is no Volcano in PR. Specially Arenal, one of the most active volano in the World. |

We were married and honeymooned in Costa Rica. It was my second time there and we can't wait to go back. Check out Hotel Si Como No in Manuel Antonio. You won't regret it !!! It is possibly the most romantic place on earth !!! Every room has an AMAZING VIEW perched high above the Pacific !!! |

I went to Costa Rica for my honeymoon in December. We loved it. There is so much to do, and the place is beautiful. We stayed on the Pacific side, which is a dry tropical forest. We saw part of the Caribbean side, and I would defiantly recommend staying on that side. That is the rain forest side. We stayed at a 5 star all inclusive hotel, and with airfare it was about 4,000. We were there for an entire week. The all inclusive is very nice since you don't have to pay for meals or drinks. I picked between Puerto Rico and Costa Rica also. We are going to go back. We could have stayed another week and not been bored. They have hot springs that are gorgeous, volcanoes, national parks, and tons of other things to do. If you like adventure, I would defiantly recommend white water rafting. We stayed at the Occidental Grand Papaygo. Oh yeah the food was awsome. Their dollar is like 500 of ours, because it is a third world country. If you go you need to ask about the beach that is sea shell. All the sand at this beach is crushed sea shells. If you are looking for a good night life, there was not much of that as far as we could tell. The people are super friendly, and pretty good english. |
