They will not sell you alcohol as the drinking age is 18 and they do card big time. They will ask for your Drivers license or your passport.

Legally it's 18 to drink however you will have no problem either buying beer and liquor yourself or having someone get it for you. Furthermore, nobody, including the police, will hassle you for drinking.

Costa Rica is very laid back and relaxed. There are many laws on the books here that are not enforced at all, and as long as you dont absuse them extensively, you will not be bothered.

Enjoy your Spring Break, and drink all you want to. Just dont drive drunk and you'll be fine and have a blast!

dude, you don't need alcohol in costa rica to have fun!!! :P do you know any kids there? like american private school kids? cus they have awesome parties.
but seriously, dont get in trouble. its not worth it!

Many people, especially younger visitors to Costa Rica wonder what the legal age is for drinking alcohol, buying cigarettes, etc.

Here's a short list of the "Legal Ages" here in Costa Rica:

* Legal age to rent a car = 25
* Legal age to purchase or consume alcohol = 18
* Legal age to purchase or consume cigarettes = 18
* Legal age to obtain a drivers license & drive = 18
-maturing past 18 is not required, adolescent driving is the norm in Costa Rica ;o)
* Legal age of consent with another adult = 18
* Legal age to join the military = none
-Costa Rica has no military!
* Legal age to enter into a legal contract = 18
* Legal age to view Rated "R" movie = 18
* Legal age to scan groceries = 16
-Must be 18 to scan a customer's purchase of alcohol
* Legal age to marry without permission = 16
* Legal age to marry with parental permission = 15
* Legal age to view Rated "PG-13" movie =15
* Legal age for employment = 15 (restrictions on types, hours per day/week, etc.)
* Compulsory age of education = 15
* Legal age of consent between minors = 15
* Legal age to be dispensed birth control pills = 14
* Legal age to view Rated "PG" movie = 12
* Legal age to view nudity & "X" rated television = no minimum age
* Legal age to view Rated "G" movie = no minimum age
* Legal age to pick coffee = no minimum age (not verified)

I'm sure that is more information than you wanted, but the facts are interesting ... maybe you can use them in a school paper ;o)

Legally they can't but it all depends on the resort. Especially if you are there with your family at a restaurant, they sometimes won't ask for ID. They may just say "are you 18" and if you say yes, they might serve you. But most bars/clubs will ask you for ID

All they ask you for is at least a copy of your passport, besides it is not safe or smart to carry around your actual passport anyways. All you have to do is a little bit of editing on your computer, to your birthday on a copy of your passport, and your good to go!
