Question about juan santamaria and/or juan santamaria day? |
okay first off please don't copy and paste a whole page of info just quick simple maybe a paragraph answer
i know that he died in the battle of rivas etc
but why is he such a big deal?
did he win it for costa rica or was he like the only costa rican to do something in this battle or what? why isn't he the same as any other soldier in the battle? |

In the battle of "Rivas" the invaders leaded by William Walker where using a house or "Meson" as their command center which gave them a better attack position over the costarican's. This man called Juan Santamaria offered to go to and try and burn down this place using a torch, he said that he would do it if someone would take care of his mother if he died. So he ran towards the invaders hideout, he was lethally wounded but before he died he managed to start a fire and force the invaders to come out of their hideout and therefore be defeated. So whats special about him is that even though he knew he was going to die and his mother would be alone, he was willing to do this in order to restore peace in his country.
Still is hasn't been confirmed that this man really did what the story tells, but this isn't important for costaricans, what matters is what the story represents and to set and example on how we should be willing to defend the country we love even if it means loosing out life.

Juan SantamarĂa fought in the battle against William Walker who was a crazy soldier from the south that tried to conquer central america until he arrived to the costarrican border and a small group of soldiers fought him.
Juan SantamarĂa ran and burned down the place where they were at and defeated William Walker and his army.

William Walker was an American Mercenary who wanted to make a slave state in Central America to balance out the free states that were being added in the north.
He took his army into Costa Rica and declared war on the country. The Costa Ricans had other ideas.
When Walker and his friends were holed up in a cabin, Juan Santamaria, a drummer boy, volunteered for a suicide mission to burn him out.
Walker escaped and was killed in Honduras by their army. |
