Question about the country panama? |
hello i have a question.
so let me start off with i am half panamanian and half puerto rican.
im just a spanish I live in the US.
all my life when i was a kid and up till now(im 18) people always say that i look asian. People try to sometimes guess my race and they always say asian...or chinese ALWAYS. and i always tell them no i am not asian. i have no asian in me whatsoever.
i can see why people mistaken my because i have long straight black hair, i am not that tan and my eyes are slanted. i also look at my mom and her family and they all look somewhat asian.
(now i know alot of asians don't have the same characteristics but it seems people around here think they do.)
So one day a person randomly asked me on the train to my way to school if i am chinese. i said no. so then he asked me then what are you, i told him what i am and he said "oh panamanians are chinese anyway so your asian."
i didn't say anything because then he left quick.
i thought to myself that's not right im spanish but.. theres alot of chinese in panama.
are panamanians chinese ?
or hes just crazy and wrong? |

Yeah, he's crazy and wrong, don't worry about him.
My wife is Panamanian also, and she also gets that often, that people think she's asian, although she doesn't have asian blood.
I think it is because of the races mix in Panama : Spanish, Africans (Jamaicans) and Natives (Indians). That mix "produces" people looking a bit asian.
So don't worry, just be proud your Panamanian! |

If you ever go to Panama you will be surprised that there are Chinese people in every town and around every corner. Not only do they have a major influence on the canal zone, but the building of the canal itself relied heavily on Chinese immigrant workers. It has left a lasting and unchangeable impact on Panamanian culture as they seem to have adopted a lot of it as their own...especially the food. Chow and lo mein reign supreme down there, even in the middle of nowhere. You might possibly have Chinese in your heritage because of this but unless you're racist, it shouldn't matter. Embrace it. |

What he said was pretty stupid. I've been confused at times to be Filipino, and my mother is Panamanian. In fact, as a baby you could of sworn I was from Korea b/c how small my eyes were and I was mega pale.
Most Panamanians are very mixed, my great grandfather was Chinese which could explain my look. Talk to most Panamanians and they can tell you that some of their cousins are very white with green eyes, other are blacks (Jamaicans), Jewish, and yes, Chinese! Lots of people here have a relative who is of Asian background. Come to Panama and you'll see plenty of Chinese people, especially at kiosks.
Ask your mom about her relatives. You might be surprised how diverse it is. Hope this helps. |

Panama' is known as the Crossroads of the World! You very well could have Chinese in you. As well as Native American, Jamaican, European, Hindu, Arabian, and anything else you can imagine! Most of the people I know in Panama' were of mixed origen, with Black, White and Native American the dominant combo. White includes Spanish Euros. Many of the full blooded Natives in Panama' have eyes that could be mistaken for Asian. Relax, your unique blend of ancestry gives you an intriguing look! |
