before recommending a hotel in panama city one needs to really know what you are looking for. panama city has many hotels for all types and prices. Hospedaje Casco Viejo doesn't seem like a hotel, most likely it is a building furnished for backpackers and tourists looking for a cheap hotel. Personally I wouldn't stay there, because I doubt it is really a hotel and also because it is located in a pretty dangerous part of town. You can see the sites in Casco Viejo but you can't just wonder off to nearby places. Country Inn & Suites is located pretty close to everything is surely it is a nice place to stay, probably 75 dollars a night, somewhere around there and hotel tower suites seems nice too, in a centric part of town.... since i am a panamanian and live in the city, i don't really stay in tourist hotels.
In panama there are two basic types of hotels... tourist hotels that all have restaurants, casinos, swimming pools, and so forth... they range from 50-200 dollars a night.... the other type are cheaper hotels that range from 15-35 a night that don't really have swimming pools and the ones who stay there are people on a low budget that are here on business and they are also used by couples that are looking for a room to relax in.... some of these are actually nice and are located in a decent part of town.
i'll give you a list... of each kind.
1. more expensive nicer hotels
sheraton
marriott
miramar
hotel el panama
hotel veneto
hotel continental
crowne plaza hotel
hotel granada
i would probably choose hotel el panama
cheaper
hotel ribadavia
hotel venecia
costa inn
hotel aramo
hotel veracruz
residencial los arcos
hotel california
plaza paitilla inn

i would probably go for hotel veracruz or residencial los arcos.....
residencial los arcos is in a tranquil part of town, has a supermarket next to it, a park, avenida balboa and it is close, walking distance from the heart of the city... can get a room there for 25 dollars... however, no pool, no restaurant, just an ice and coke machine.... has cable and porn channel included because it is place where a lot of local couples go for sex... if doesn't bother you, i would recommend it for you......
just being honest.
good luck with your trip.

before posting, country inn and hotel tower suite areas are very secure.... however, country inn does not have many places to go to within walking distance.... it is not away from everything, just that not too many tourist attractions close to it. Hotel Tower Suites is probably better for you.
if you have the money... just go to hotel el panama, if you prefer ocean view... plaza paitilla inn probably works best... miramar is right on the ocean but it is very expensive.

Depends on your budget actually. If you can afford to pay $150.00+ for a hotel room get the best (Marriott; Sheraton Panama, Sheraton 4 Points, Decapolis, El Panama Hotel, The Bristol, The Riande Contintental, Veneto Hotel & Casino etc.)

If your budget is $80.00 to $120.00 try Country Inns, Courtyard, Ambassador Suites.

You can find cheap $35.00 to $50.00 hotels in good areas. Most of them are in The Cangrejo area near the Veneto. Try those.

I recommend you the ones near to El Cangrejo, that they are cheap and are in a good area.

The hotel cost aprox. $25 to $30 no more, and you are in the heart of Panama and each of them have their restaurant and good attention, i recommend for anyone that comes a visit Panama.

The Hotels are:
Hotel Marbella
Hotel El Parador.

They are very, very close of the city, from there you can move walking and it is a very good place, no problem of getting something stolen. Most of the foreigners likes to stay in this area.

magus
Plaza Paitilla, Radisson Hotel, they are very good, and the neighborhood is secure
