You have to have a valid passport, certified copy of your birth certificate and a certified copy of a divorce decree or a certified copy of a death certificate if you were married before and divorced or lost your spouse through death. Blood test for communicable disease and a receipt for the marriage license fee. Pretty much the same requirements you would have to meet in the US.

I'm a costa rican woman married to an USA citizen. Let me tell you that, instead of my husband moving here we decided me moving there, and I'll tell you why.

The requirements are very similar in both countries, but here you have to paid an attorney, and amazingly is cheaper in the states. Second, the new immigration law is harder, you would need to show some really impressive assets in order to be accepted here, just because the government don't want middle class citizen getting in the country and taking jobs from costaricans or living out from the system (like health care).

as others pointed out, it's rather tough to get into the country. and if you do, remember, you not only marry your Tica, but the whole family! it's not like back in the US, where you can stay fairly cut-off if you wish. no such thing in CR.
this has good sides, but also negative ones, if you're not used to having what you perceive to be your privacy, 'violated' all the time.
You will be EXPECTED to play Santa Claus to an endless stream of cousins, nephews, nieces, aunts, etc.

eyes wide open!

Costa Rica is a third world country, with nothing to call attention. Lots of insecurity and drug trafficking. Not a good place to visit.

Nicaragua is better.
