Should I book a tour to Machu Picchu ahead of time?

I'm leaving in 4 days, but I figured once I get to Lima, I'd look around for different packages to Machu Picchu. I know there's a limit for how many people can go per day. Will tickets be sold out? It's not the high season, right?
Additional Details
Also, are there more than one train company that you can travel with? I'm worried because I looked up schedules on this site http://www.orient-express.com/web/tper/tper_a2a_home.jsp and a lot of the days are sold out already. I can't book now because we aren't sure if we're going from Lima to Nazca then to Cuzco or from Lima to Cuzco then to Nazca.

The peak season is in June, July and August, so YES you are going in peak season (This is the Inti Raymi month, the old Inca celebration of the sun which will happen on the 3rd week of the month). So far there is only one train service to Machu Picchu, the Orient Express, also called PeruRail in that route. There is a second one starting operations, but I don't think it will be ready by June.

You should always be early and plan your trip. When you get to Lima, go to the nearest travel agent and book a ticket to Machu Picchu. You never know what might happen.

No, You dont have too. I've lived there before. People spend soo much money getting there early and booking tours. You can just show up at the place and they'll give you a guide. You will save so much money. I've seen tons of people being ripped off. Good luck!!
Peru Rock!!!

Planning early for any trip is key to ensure that you will be able to get the dates of arrival and departure that you want and the right prices to any country outside the US. Good luck! :)
