Yep Go for it, I am, I bought some property on the coast as well as an apartment close to the airport in Guayaquil, Ecuador offers some unique opportunities and the the crime rate isn't that high like a previous entrant suggested, in fact it actually has a much lower crime rate than the US.....Ren

I plan to! My husband and I would like to buy some land in the rainforest and open a small lodge. We want to spend "the golden years" in the forest, introducing people to the amazing things we've come to love. I love Ecuador, I'll be there in Feb.

I am from Ecuador, It is the best place to live for a couple of years, but since a lot of cities are growing they are becoming very crowded and the taffic is just crazy. Things in general are becoming more expensive, there are many places where u could get more with ur money than here... but still an awesome place if u have someone to share it with.

The big "plus" Ecuador has is that, in such a small place, you can visit quite different landscapes.

Check this site for photos:

If you do come, try a smaller city, like Cuenca or Otavalo.

Quito and Guayaquil are overcrowded and as any big city, they have a problem with crime.

But if you're used to a more metropolitan life, you should try Santiago, Chile or Buenos Aires, Argentina, instead.

Wow, that's a long time to plan ahead, especially to live in a country where governments rarely last 2 years. Having spent some time in Ecuador earlier this year, it would not be on my short list of places to retire, but it does have some advantages. I do not know the coastal areas, and for me they would not be attractive as I am not fond of hot, humid weather.

Advantages of Quito and the highlands:
Equitable climate, never too hot or cold
Interesting culturally
Beautiful scenery nearby
Quito is big enough to offer range of services
Decent (not great) health care
Inexpensive housing at the upper end of the scale
Currently uses US dollar as currency
Overall cost of living is fairly low

Disadvantages:
Country is politically unstable
Much of the economy depends on narcotraficantes and oil, not signs of economic stability
Crime rates are fairly high, lots of dangerous areas
Quito is crowded
Proximity to active volcanoes
