Well, I am gutemalan, and lie in Guatemala city, First of all the phone has to be "Unlocked" it means you can use any company`s sim card. What i suggest is to buy te sim card from "Tigo", they charge you by the second not by the minute, and it is very cheap to cal locally and overseas. You can buy the sim card in allmost any gas service station, for Q 50 (quetzales) or $ 6.5. Hope it works, if not , ask again :)

Yes, make sure phone is unlocked, and any sim card will work. Rates to the US are dirt chaep!

My daughter just came back from there and she used Vodafone sim card. She also has a motorola but I'm not sure of the model #.
Talk to Vodafone / Verizon - I know they service that area and it's a very reasonable price for a temporary sim card. Have fun there, she loved it! :-)
