South America or Central America?

Provided that I can fly to both Central America and (Northern) South America for the same amount of sky miles. Which place would be best for a two week budget backpacking adventure, in Jan 2007 for my girlfriend and I?

el salvador is the place for you if you like hiking el salvador is said to have the highest mountains and hills in all central america the beaches are supposed to be among the best specially if you like to surf the country has amazing waterfalls and its such a benefit that the country is 21,041km cuz you only need 5 days to see the whole country its very cheap and its beautiful and the food is delicious also if you like ancient maya and things like that we have a place called joya the ceren i believe and you can go see pyramids and stuff so you should have alot of fun there and people from el salvador are very friendly the country is known for their great hospitality you wont regret it at all you should read from yahoo answers what people have to say about the country i havent heard anything but the truth about how great el salvador is!

My granddaughter and a couple friends just went 4 or 5 mos ago to Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua and back to Costa Rica she had a great time one of the things they saw was the Panama Canal she thought it was really awesome. I think you would like it from the stories she has told about her trip and the pictures she brought back.

Letal.
Of course Rio d' Janeiro Brasil http://www.concierge.com/destination/riodejaneiro?mbid=overture

go to the GALAPAGOS ISLANDS in ECUADOR. is a trip you wont regret!!!
with your skymiles you book a trip to guayaquil, ecuador and from there you either take a plane to the islands or by boat. but try and plan this ahead of time. january is a good time because is summer time. it begins in december. if you stay in guayaquil, theres the hilton hotel not far from the airport or the sheraton. you could see them both online.

If you only have 2 weeks I would go to Central America, you can see and do more regarding countries. As the region is a lot smaller.
If you come to S.America, distances are greater and you would be restricted to just one country those being - Colombia, Venezuala and Equador (they are the northern ones). If you have to choose you could do a lot in Equador in those 2 weeks.

Although it is technically North America, I strongly recommend you to visit Cancun and the Riviera Maya. You'll find everything here: From Luxurious hotels to log cabins by the sea. Mayan Ruins, small towns, culture, great food, clean and clear beaches, and the warmth of Mexican people.

Hope it helps.

In terms of safety, probably Costa Rica-
If you don't know Spanish- there are probably more English speakers in CR bc they're used to gringo tourists. There are fabulous places in Venezeula, but you would want to go only with organized tour groups, not a backpacking adventure.
That's a hard question when you're dealing with safety...

Some people suggested Brazil but it isn't northern South America! I suggest visit Cancun.

I would go to South America for backpacking as Central America is too conflicted. Peru would be awesome.
