The guy above is wrong. The characteristcs of the language are very different to all the other ways Spanish are spoken. For instance we speak the purest Spanish in the world (least amount of slang and closer to the original language than any other country).

We rarely use the "usted" form here. The most used form is "tu" but we tend to mix them both throughout the conversation. And if you are from my city which is Medellin you use the form "Voz" which they also use in Argentina. Here are some words that we only really use here.

Que mas? is like "what's up"

bien o no? "are you good?

chicharron: is a food but here it also means big problem and is used frequently

parcero/parce is like dude

chimba: Be careful when you use this, it's actual meaning is a womans privates, but here we use it to say something that is cool. Ejemplo, ese carro es una chimba - that car is really cool.

Galleta: means buscuit, but we also use it to say when something is cool

Chirrete: street rat, or chav

plata: money

that is some of the characteristics of our language

each country have their own dialect... and Colombia has various dialects

the mayority of people who live in the Andes Mountains speak the spanish slowly... but there are little differences (paises, cundiboyacenses, tolimences, vallecaucanos)

in the southwest in the frontier with Ecuador, in the Nariño departament, the poeple speak the spanish in similary form to the Ecuatorians, Peruvians and Bolivians... it sounds a lot funny, it is Andean Spanish,

in the Eastern zone (llanos), they have their own form to speak

in the pacific coast, the mayority of the population have their own dialects, they are the vast majority of descendants of former African slave... and they have their own form to speak Spanish

and in the northern coast (Caribbean Coast), where I live, we have a own dialect, very different to the rest of the country, and more similary to the Spanish spoken in Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, or the Canary Islands

Spanish spoken in BOGOTA is very cool .. they speak correctly.

Jaime E
They use "usted" instead of "tu" all the time, regardless if the conversation is between friends or an unknown person. Other than that there are no usage differences from the standard Spanish lang. I would say that the way Colombians speak would be pretty much the same that you hear on the tapes you have used to learn Spanish.
