Seems pricey, but iyou may be getting wh at you pay for. How much support to the volunteers get? Are excursions included? Are people lodged in good hotels or in homestays? Does part of the money paid by the volunteers support local community or environmental organizations. If the volunteers get good support, they stay in hotels, there are excursions included and part of the money goes to community organizations then it is a little high but fair. If the volunteer coordinator is not with you everyday and they essentially bring you to the place where you volunteer and pick you up when you are done, and they do not provide money to local organizationsw, it should cost $1800-$2400 with airfare.

That said, if you can afford it, it will be an exciting opportunity. Do it.

You could do the trip for half or less if you drop the volunteerism. Yeah it is most likely a rip off.

I am sure there are legitimate volunteer projects in COsta Rica but the ones I've seen are disgraceful. THey charge the poor schmucks way too much and have them waste their time doing idiotic things. One scam has volunteers paying to give English lessons while charging 6 bucks an hour for the other schmucks to take them. THis lady is getting 50 bucks an hour from the students and over 100 bucks a day from the volunteers for providing a room, no books, pencils, etc. And then over charges for room and board, which she farms out to still more victims. SHe pays about 70 a week for people to take in volunteers but charge twice that. She even scams them on taxi services.

No doubt volunteering is a noble endeavor but doing in in C.R. is most likely a scam. Go surfing, eat like a pig, have fun and save a fortune- don't pay to volunteer for some group that is getting rich doing nothing except making some phone calls and maintaining a web site.

i agree with some of your other answers...if you can afford it..great.....if not check around some more.....in Alajuela there is a volunteer program that is free...hatchedtoflyfree.org....they will set you up in a B&B for $15 per night which includes 3 meals and laundry....maybe volunteer for 1 week and then do a vacation with surfing and etc....and by being here you will learn from the locals deals you will never find in booksor the internet

Yes, and the experience is priceless.

not knowing from where you travel - but I can get a flight from Europe to CR for around 1,000.0 US right now. with the rest, I could live nicely for three months, and don't have to "volunteer".

seems way too high!

ok, sounds a bit pricey. Check out the airfare at your website of choice for the dates you are traveling.

figure about $100 average hotel room per day and $25 for food per day.

then you can get an idea how much are they charging you for the activities and transfers.

of course, if price isn't an issue, pack your bags ASAP. Costa Rica is a beautiful place to visit. PLUS the weather has been pretty nice this past few weeks.

hope this helps
