Things to do in Peru and beyond? |
I have had a hard time meeting ppl in Lima and have thrown in the towel for travel buddies, instead Im just gonna do Peru solo and get out. Other than machu pichu and the aztec lines what are some other must see things? And are there travel companies that cater to singles? |

Ok, first of all, it is the NAZCA lines. The aztecs never made it to South America.
there is plenty to do in Peru, it depends on what you like. There is beaches (Asia 100 kms. south of Lima), Mancora and Punta Sal (more than 1,000 kms north of lima, close to the equatorial line) and for surfers there is Cabo Blanco, Vichayito and Malabrigo (also known as Chicama).
If you want archeology, there is Cuzco and Machu Picchu, but also Choquequirao close to Cuzco. Close to Lima there is Pachacamac, the most sacred temple in Inca times (it actually pre-dates the incas, but they asimilated it into their cult) after the Coricancha. Close to were the Nazca lines are there is also the Paracas, who used to do complex brain surgery and mumified their dead.
To the north there is the Museum of the Royal Tombs of Sipan in Lambayeque, quite impressive and, in my humble opinion, the best kept archeological museum in Peru.
You can also try to know about the elussive Chachapoyas (the people of the clouds) and their fortress in Kuelap (north of Lima and towards the jungle).
If you're into jungle, then visiting Tarapoto (northern Amazon Jungle at the fringe of the andes mountains) is a good choice. If you go, try the ice cream made with fresh milk and fresh fruit.
If you want to get further into the jungle try Loreto (probably the only state capital city in the world that cannot be reached by land, only by river boat or airplane. If there, try the Pacaya-Samiria tio see the pink river dolphins.
You can also try the southern jungle and visit the Manu reserve in Madre de Dios to see the giant river otters and the gallito de las rocas (a bird called "rooster of the rocks").
If you're more the partying type, then check out the clubs and watering holes at Larco Mar or spend the whole night at "boulevard sur" at the Asia beach.
I find it best to travel with other people, otherwise you get lonely. I suggest you go to downtown Lima sometime at midday after you arrive in Peru and check out the groups of foreigners. Pick one that looks like it fits with your personality and approach them. Maybe make some small talk and then ask if you can tag along. Noto necesarily sleep in the same room, but follow with them so as not to be alone. |

Go to the amazon! I just went.. it was incredible. They even have a really nice luxury hotel out there.. Its called Ceiba Tops Resort. they have a pool, air conditioning, electricity... Or if you don't mind roughing it.. i would visit ACTS or Explornapo lodge. They have this really incredible canopy walkway (longest canopy walkway in the world!). All these resorts are owned by the same company.. the people are great... I really recommend it! |

There is so much to do in Lima. Museams and cultural buildings. If it is companionship you seek. Try pizza alley across from Kennedy park in Miraflores. I am sure you find someone to guide you.
Iquitos is only an hour plane ride away. Iquitos is the gateway to the amazon river and jungle. Hotels are cheap. Really friendly 400,000 people. You can sit at a cafe bar/restaraunt on the amazon river and enjoy the tranquility. Beautiful place. I recommend it.
You might want to try a travel companion website. The first link is one. |
