excuse the ignorance of the above poster.
Peru is great. Good food, nice people, and great history and very diverse.
Go to the Amazon and Machupichu.
Thanks for volunteering |

well, although you will be disgusted by the idea you MUST try the cuy or forever regret not (guinea pig). the people are very nice and understanding to our silly american mistakes (language barrier), and always have a smile on their face even when they are all skin and bone with no money to buy food. restaruant food is cheap and ok, although it usually doesn't have much flavor. they eat a lot of starch, and the fruits and vegetables will be different than you're used to. don't drink the water and always wash fruit and vegetables very well with bottled water before eating, i would say don't buy vegetables at all cuz we had bad experiences with them.
and remember: whatever you do even if they say it's fine, DO NOT DRINK THE TAP WATER.
woops well that isn't my experiences not really, but it kind of is, and it's mainly advice.... |

Well, the people is nice, kind and servicial. For you, certainly our customs will be strange. Our supermarkets, markets, squares are not match for those at your country but, walking across the streets you can feel the friendly atmosphere, as long as they are not contaminated with certain smells (fish, pee, you know)
Have fun! There're lots of historical places and museums |

You'll love it. We've been going to Lima for the past three years on medical mission trips and the people have really opened up their hearts to us. They will be very appreciative of any volunteering that you do, especially if you go to the earthquake sites of Pisco and Ica.
People are very friendly. The food is great! Try the chicha morada (a purple drink made with corn) and ceviche (fresh fish with Lemons) in Lima - make sure it's fresh.
Parts of Lima are pretty dirty and run-down, (compared to other Latin American cities) but in Miraflores you will find some trendy stores and upperclass neighborhoods.
Just one warning before you go:
Be ready to fall in love with Peru and its' amiable people!!! I still stay in touch with many of the people I met there two years ago. |

It smells so bad there lol I kid you not.
Bring some of that stuff doctors use to keep themselves from smelling dead bodies, it'll help, till you get used to it. |
