Anna

To those people who are telling me not to 'thump' my religion in guatemala?

we wouldn't be going there to try and convert them, it's a trip to help build stuff. my brother went to the dominican republic with this youth group last year and they didn't impose christianity on them or anything. they just helped them build a school fence so their books won't get stolen and helped them install computers in their classrooms.

so get over yourselves and stop judging us Christians.

=)

I didn't "judge" you. But you sure had a defensive reaction.
I'm sorry, but I have a very hard time believing that a christian youth group will travel thousands of miles to a different country and make no effort whatsoever to convert the people there. I know -- I used to be a missionary, but I wised up. The coercing is often subtle, but real nonetheless. For example, the group will do something worthy and helpful (like installing computers), then afterwards will have a "prayer meeting" for both the workers and the locals, and the locals feel obligated to attend because of what the group just did for them. And many other similar situations.

If you really want to do good for these people, and have no selfish motives, then don't tell any of them what sect you come from, what your religion is, don't hold any prayer meetings or services that they feel obligated to attend -- just go down there, help them out, and leave. They'll be very grateful, you will have done a good thing, and you won't be doing it with a hidden motive as most such trips go. You know, they don't call them "missionary trips" for nothing...

dear - in Guatemala - they will be "thumping" their religion right along with you! :) remember the song.... and they know we are Christian by our love, by our love, yes they'll know we are Christians by our love!
enjoy your trip and remember you're doing this as a loving act of Charity - one of the graces of God.
Godspeed & Safe Travels!

PS - since they are generally Christians too - they'll be thumping to the same beat!!

Just go.....people need to hear the word of God. no matter what religion. Christians, Catholics....spread the word.
You can travel all the central american countries and you will be welcomed.
Believe me.

People in the Dominican Republic and Guatemala are Christians. What is your point? Nobody cares if you thump yoru religion, just don't knock on my door at all and don't burn anybody.
