Tourist gear in Costa Rica?

Im going to Costa Rica in a few weeks, have been reading Q/A regarding others travel, and noticed that alot have mentioned NOT to look touristy... no sandals, shorts, cameras, etc. except for the beach. Of course Im going want to explore (since its my first time there and traveling alone) but, at the same time, dont want to be a target.

Any suggestions on what I should wear in the city, outside/away from the resorts/beach areas?

The other two posters were right on. The best safety advice I can give you is to use common sense. San Jose at night isn't a great place to wander alone, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area. Don't wear expensive jewelry or flash wads of cash. Use the safe in the hotel to keep your valuables and only carry with you what you will need. I carry my camera everywhere and I've never had a problem. But I also don't do risky things. I also look like a text book American tourist - cargo shorts, tank top, backpack & sandals or hiking boots. No one would ever accuse me of looking like a local. Just take the same precautions you would take anywhere you are traveling and you should be fine.

Looking like a tourists doesn´t necessarily mean the way you look. If you have a backpack and a camera around your neck your gonna get noticed, but its also depending on were you are.
It is more important to know were you shouldn't walk alone. For example, I´ve seen tourist walking with backpacks and in sandals at 10 p.m. in downtown San Jose. Don´t do that!!! Check at the hotel were you should walk alone or were you shouldn´t. Some tourists got *** drunk, and started walking down the beach at 2 a.m., of course they got mugged. Its just a thing of common sense. The tourist areas like museums, national parks and hotels have very good security, so you shouldn´t worry to mych about it.
Just be careful, don´t let your camera on a table while you go to the bathroom (I´ve seen this). At the hotels try to get a safety box, they usually have them, for your valuable things.

I was in C.R for a whole year and only got mugged once.I was walking down a side st at 11pm with a Blonde Friend of mine-not good...My advice is if some one says "don't go there"...then dont! Thats the mistake I made..You can wear sandles and shorts around...no problem.Just don't wear flash jewellery or have your Camera in view all the time.If you're Blonde, you'll find it easier if you dyed your hair brown because almost no one there has blonde hair all coloured eyes and this way, tourists stand out...Everyone wears "Jeans" there and they dress up a lot even if its just a trip to the dairy so take jeans and you'll fit in.

If you have any Q's keep asking on this website and I'll try my hardest to help you prepare.

Costa Rican styles are about northamerican styles. Just do not carry cameras, laptops, cellphones too obviously. Buy a carrying bag or cheap back pack here, similar to what you see other people using (of course do not imitate the tourist bags). But do not believe you will be camouflaged no matter how you dress, all foreigners are easy to spot. SO just do not show off what you are carrying.

ANother note. Robbing tourist seems to be part of of the tax collection system, an unacknowledged method of spreading the wealth. USe your head and do not volunteer to over pay.
