I'm going to Tamarindo, Costa Rica in April for 6 months. Can anyone tell me about the town? Is it safe? Is it big? I've heard a lot of mix reviews. Thanks for your help. |

Tamarindo is a hopping town, loaded with surfers and tourists. Probably the best assets are its, waves (Witch's Rock one of the best surfing places in CR) crystal clear ocean, world-class restaurants, sportsfishing, exclusive hotels, exquisite nature, and awesome sunsets. However, backpackers and some low-key travelers might be turned off by Tamarindo’s touristy elements.
It is not quite the crazyness of Jaco because it has its own culture and branding, but some say it is getting close to it.
It is safe as long as you use common sense (like don/t flash wads of money around in a open market)
If you are going for 6 months, make sure you see the other areas of CR, like the volcanos, hot spring etc.
I know you are going to have fun and best wishes. |

Tamarindo is known as a surfing town due to teh long continuos breakig waves that crest offshore. People come to the reagion to learn spanish, to surf, adn to see th beach with the turtles. FYI if you cross the river you will get to playa grande whre there are sea turles nesting, pretty cool huh?
The more populous the region teh higher the crime rate, this applies everywhere. Having been there and enjoyed the bustling streets and busy atmosphere it was an okay place to be. It is reasonably small (small enough to walk most places) the roads to and from are in pretty bad shape so expect slow going and large pot holes. Tamarindo is on the Nicoya peninsula, known for having the most beautiful beaches. If you need a break adn feel like soem indulgence there is a pretty reasonably prices all inclusive resort ont eh southern tip of the ithsmus called playa tambor I bleieve. Worth it for a get away.
Dont forget to take advantage and see more of teh coutry while you are there it is a beautiful and friendly place where I am sure you will make many good friends. |

I've been to Tamarindo twice and on my last visit 2 years ago I was appalled by the development - 5-6 story condominiums, burger king, pizza hut, subway sandwiches, tcby yogurt, upscale boutiques, etc. I even saw a billboard for a huge business park that was being built! It's more like a southern California beach town then Costa Rica
Tamarindo has no sewer system all the development has overwhelmed the town's septic system and last year raw sewage was flowing into the ocean forcing a month long closure of the beaches in the area. Tamarindo has lost it's blue flag status and will never regain it
There are much nicer places in Costa Rica - I'd avoid Tamarindo
Tamarindo = BABYLON |

You're going to love it! Tamarindo is Beautiful. I was in Junquillal for a couple of months over the summer and went to Tamarindo numerous times. To me it was very touristy but they had a lot of fun things there. Beaches, restaurants, shops, banks everything. The people were very nice too, probably because they are use to dealing with foreigns. I never encountered any mean people my whole stay in CR. THe key is to act neutral. Go out of your way to speak to the locals, and dress inconspicuously. the more you stand out the more of a reason a chico has to bother you. Tamarindo is a really nice place to stay, and you won't feel alienated because there are tons of travelers there. You're going to have so much fun! Costa is one of the best places i've visited! |
