Travel ideas for last week in January - Latin America?

I'm looking for some ideas of a destination for around the last week in January, maybe 7-10 days. Somewhere inexpensive. Driving isn't an issue. Museums, history, and architecture/archaeology are important. Shopping and expensive restaurants not so much. I'd rather not sit on a beach all day every day; I like to have things to do although I do appreciate some down time. Spending a few days in one city then moving to another is no problem. I'm really big on doing research into my destinations so any suggestions with specifics would be especially appreciated. Thanks!

I want to recommend you going to Guatemala. Guatemala has everything a tourist like you is looking for in a relative small area (its about the size of the state of Tennessee). If you want archaelogy, Guatemala was the center of the Mayan empire, so as the center it has the greatest mayan cities. I had the opportunity on going to Tikal a couple of months ago and I was amazed of the beauty of the archaelogical site (full of very tall pyramids) and the beauty of the sorroundings (its in the middle of a tropical jungle). Guatemala also has one of the best preserved colonial cities (Antigua Guatemala). Its a very nice and small city full of restaurants and hotels, being the best Casa Santo Domingo that is a restaured colonial monastery now converted into a 5 star hotel with prices around $130 per night. If you like natural beauty, Lake Atitlan (considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the world) its a lake sorrounded by 3 volcanoes and an incredible natural scenery. If you like adventure, about 40 minutes away from the capital city there is an active volcano which you can actually climb to the top and watch the lava flow right beside you. If you need other information please ask me... i will be glad to help you. Whatever your choice for vacation... have a great trip!

Not sure where you are now and whether you'd like to stay in your country or travel abroad. There are many nice and inexpensive things you can do in D.C. You could even stay at a hotel outside of DC but near a metro stop allowing you the freedom to move about without worrying about parking and meters. Have you considered Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA? There are a lot of nice sites offering an abundance of history. The architecture there is so well maintained that you feel as though you have gone back in time. In both places, you have the option of coast or mainland.
There is always a lot of history in Mexico and I hear Brazil is nice too.

Have you given thought to a Hawaiian Island cruise on Norwegian? You can see several places and only unpack once. Late January is the slow season, so it is not that expensive.
