Travel saftey in Guatemala?

I've travelled to many different countries by myself and have never really been worried. I'm going to Gutemala in a couple weeks time and I've been looking at the travel advise and it's starting to worry me - especially this
'In the most common scenario tourists or business travelers, who land at the airport around 7:00 am, are held up by armed men as their vehicle departs the airport. Private vehicles, taxis and shuttle buses have been attacked.'
My plane will be landing at 5.30am and i'm being picked up in a private vehicle and now I'm scared I'm gonna get my luggage taken!!! U think I'll be ok?

Just to clarify that I saw this statement on the US government travel website

First of all, the US travel department is paranoid as most americans are of foreign travel. Statistically, you are more likely to get attacked in the U.S. than in Mexico or Guatemala.

Now here is the answer I gave to the British woman who questionned Guatemala's safety.

I have been to Guatemala twice. Once I took a plane and used the local buses to visit and the other time and drove down with my van. I have never had any problems what so ever. I have seen many parts of the country including remote areas out of the tourist circuit. It is by far the most beautiful country in central america. I can tell you that Guatemalans are shy and friendly people. Guatemala city is a bit more hazardous, but most folks leave this polluted city as soon as they arrive in the country. The only other place which might pose a risk is in Panajachel where certain people have reportedly been pick-pocketed, but this might be an urban legend and by no means is this a dangerous village.Like other respondants said, try to dress casually and leave expensive stuff at home, you shouldn't have any problems. Be sure to visit Tikal and Lago de Atitlan, another favorite of mine is Semuc Champey which is less known that the previous two. Have a great trip.

Relax. Guatemala is a great place! If you have any language skills it will help. The country is poor, but is a democratic nation, and the crime is very low for travellers. Just make sure when you get your bags from the luggage pick up, you don't let a baggage slave take them from you.

Politely refuse and then go to the pickup spot your ride is to get you.
It is busy, but don't get in a hurry. And don't let them rush you.

If your getting a private pickup, you'll be fine. Public is a bit risky only cause your in with a lot of folks and they pack the luggage on top of the chicken bus. Which can be damaged.

RELAX! IT IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE!

Where did you find that statement? That sounds scary! I was in Guatemala a couple of years ago, picked up in a private vehicle and was fine...

I'd recommend looking through the safety/security section on the state department's website: http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1129.html

I've traveled quite a bit myself as well--nothing is ever guaranteed, but I haven't had any serious incidents like the one you mentioned. I would say, just be cautious and on your guard as you're travelling, and spend as much time as you can with someone who is experienced, knows the area, and is trustworthy. I wish you all the best!

I was in Guatemala City in April of this year and am going back next week. I had a wonderful time and I am not worried about next week at all. Just use common sense....the same sense you would use in any large city, such as DC or NYC.
