Additional Details
Ok so i know that Costa Rica is huge and theres plenty to do...
So my target Areas are

I fly into San Jose and i plan on going to the following
~Arenal Volcano & hotsprings/Monteverde - Cloud Forest (1 day trip)
~Guanacaste - maybe rincon de la vieja, has anyone been? if so could you suggest lodging (preferably budget, hostels if possible
~Tamarindo for beaches and the like
~Manuel Antonio for the national park and activities, maybe canopy tour or white water rafting

based on these locations if anyone can give any suggestions as to lodging for each area, dining and also transportation if you have previous experience taking local flights (ex. nature air as well as the buses)

Here is a hostel in Liberia/Guanacaste:

This hostel is in Quepos near Manuel Antonio:

This hostel is just outside La Fortuna near Arenal:

The three hostels above are places I have stayed on past trips and would recommend.Another traveler recommended Walaba Lodge at Punta Eva Beach in Limon to me but I haven't stayed there...Hope this helps you.Have a great trip!

Nine days is not long enough to do toooooo much traveling. You need to decide on 2 locations and stay there.... although the country is not that big, the roads are terrible, dangerous, and what might be a 4 hour ride in the USA is a 12 hour ride in Costa Rica.

I would forget about Limon or the carribean side all together... got o Arenal and Gunacaste.

With only 9 days, it might be good to concentrate on a few areas. I'd skip the Caribbean, Limon itself is crime-ridden and run down, although Cahuita is nice. You could do arenal/monteverde, manuel antonio, and perhaps some stuff in guanacaste or nicoya, and then if you have extra time do day trips to places like Volcan Poas or Braulio Carillo.

WOW...9 Days is not enough to see all that...I was there for 16 and it took a lot out of me...I flew out of Liberia stayed in Tamerindo-Samera-Montizuma-Mal Pais-Mount Verde-Arenal...
The driving when not on the Pan American Highway is painfull...No streets are marked...Get a COSTA RICA ROAD MAP...We thought that we would get one there...NOPE...Not Happening unless you pay $18 at a rip-u-off mart...I loved the whole trip...I would not do Tamerindo again though...It is a small country but takes forever to travel...ALSO GET A GREAT 4X4...Dont buy a car...If you have any questions that are specific add a note and I can supply tons of info...I just want to give you what you want and not what you plan not on doing...

I went last year, stayed in arenal for a week at the volcano lodge. i would recommend visiting the hot springs and doing the canopy tour. I wouldn't spend the whole time there because it rains everyday.

For your trip up north to the Arenal area, go to the following site for some reviews made by a former Peace Corps volunteer from the area:

Information is updated through Februrary of 2007

Hi, i am here in Costa Rica I live here all my life. Stay in only one part of the country (Guanacaste, Arenal/Monteverde). Is the best way to enjoy your trip. Listen to Mike (100%)
