Traveling to Peru? |
My husband and I will be traveling to Peru in a couple of weeks to most of the major cities - Lima, Cusco, Puno, and Lake Titicaca. I was wondering if I needed the following - mosquito repellent and electricity converter. If I do need an electricity converter, where can I get one? Also, I know some Spanish, enough to get me by, but should I carry a Spanish-English dictionary? Thanks for your help! |

If you're not going to the jungle, mosquito repellent is probably not overly necessary. I never used an electricity converter in Peru myself, but you can buy them in the travel section at Walmart. A Spanish-English dictionary can't hurt; there are plenty of uncommon words that you'd never think of memorizing before you need them.
Some other travel needs for Peru include: toilet paper (not usually provided in public restrooms), water bottle with water purification tabs (you can get them at any sporting goods store), battery-free flashlight, extra batteries for cameras and whatnot because they're pretty expensive there and sunscreen (not much ozone in the mountains and you will burn even on cloudy, cold days!)
Have fun! |

You will need an electricity converter. Peru is not as tourist- oriented as a lot of places, so you should take a little dictionary. There are converter sales sites on the internet that will tell you which converters you need. Yahoo travel has a lot of tips about Peru. They have a lot of good food, but be careful because their national dish is guinea pig, and I hear it does NOT taste just like chicken. |

Well i live in Cusco, so Lima is so big and there must be many places to get an electricity converter, but it could be quite far from your hotel, however in Cusco you can visit hifi store at Calle nueva (only 4 blocks from the main plaza). In such a store you can find any type of electricity converter. On the way through sol avenue there are at least 3 drugstores where you can buy insect repellent as well as bookstores nearby

You won't need mosquito repellent here, it's winter and you're not gonna be in the jungle. It's good to have an electricity converter or adapter if you're bringing a blow drier or something. But if you want to charge your camera or phone or laptop, it'll probably work if you just plug it into the wall. You can get converters in a lot of places, I would just go to Wal-Mart. Definitely bring a dictionary.
Also, if you're going to Puno make sure you bring really really warm clothes. The temperatures there are below freezing, a lot of people up there are even dying from the cold. You should also definitely get pills to help you adjust to the altitude, because you'll get really sick otherwise- splitting headaches and vomiting. |
