Traveling to a third-world country? |
Traveling to a third-world country?
I am traveling to a third world country in a few weeks and I am worried about diarrhea. Obviously we won't be drinking the water, eating anything that isn't boiled or cooked, and no fruits. What are some medicines that I can take? Does Pepto-Bismol work? Are there any prescriptions that I can get? Please help me! Additional Details Why is that a weird question? It is a fact that this kind of stuff happens when you travel and I simply want to be prepared. |

what a weird question...Weird because there is nothing to fear of no more than the same warnings you take where you live, just because is a ''third-world'' or is because you think that you are all inmune where you are because is the ''first-world''. |

Pepto-Bismol worked for me every time I had a problem, but it didn't work as well for my wife Fortunately Lomotil is available over the counter at all the farmacias in Mexico (and probably where you're going), so I would lokk for that. |

depends on the country and also on the locale within this country.
generally, in Costa Rica the water is safe to drink! Exceptions may be in very remote or rural areas, but unless you are way out in the boonies, you're OK.
Nicaragua is iffy, but if it's from a private well from a safe area (not close to sanitation beds), it will be safe as well.
In Cuba, you can drink the water pretty much anywhere. these are just a few examples.
Just in case, take PB and/or Imodium along. |

It is wise to be prepared. you CAN eat fruit if you can peel it, then wash your hands, then eat it, or soak it for 20 minutes n water with the purifying drops in it. At any grocery store in the produce dept, they sell small bottles of purifing drops for fruit and veggies. You put in one drop for each qt. of water and soak the veggies in the water to kill the bacteria. There are meds you can buy in any farmacia if you get diarrhea. One is OXAL...there are 2 tablets in the package. Take one right away and one in 24 hours. This is to kill parasites in case you ate a fruit or veggie that had not been properly cleaned. The other is Lomotil...take one each time you have diarrhea, up to 4 tabs a day. You do not need a prescription for them and tehy are very cheap. You can ask local people what is available there , too. Pepto bismal may relieve your symptoms, but it is not a cure. And some people find it just makes them vomit. Drink bottled water and use it to brush your teeth, too. |
