Truly budget hotels in Lake Atitlan area Guatemala.?

I'm gearing up for a long weekend trip to GUatemala and I plan on visiting the Lake Atitlan area, I've been checking the tourist websites for cheap places to stay but none are for the current year, with the economy the way it is worldwide, I need to know about how much to expect to spend on lodging, food, and travel while there (5 days). I'm not a high maintenance person, just need some safe place to lay my head. Oh, and are the hotels open on christmas day can I expect to find a vacancy when I get to Pana on the 25th dec. 2008?

All hotels will be opne yopu can find cheap hotel whne ypu get there. Since cheap hotels are managed by locals it is goign to be really tought to find webistes that talk abnout them.

Your better chance is to look for a cheap hotel when you get there. You can fnd hotels that will charge you Q.30 a night. Good Luck and be careful with the really cheap ones they are know to have bed bugs and shiz like that.

I live in Honduras and have visited Guatemala many times. There are plenty of places to stay and eat for the budget minded, and if you use the public buses you can travel for a pittance. I expect the other poster's estimate of expenses is not far off, but at this late date I have to strongly advise you to make sure you have a place to stay before you arrive or you could very well end up sleeping in the street. Lago Atitlan is just like any other vacation destination. The holidays will see it busy.

There are plenty of hotels just go. Your biggest expense will be liquor. San Pedro is dirt cheap. You may have to ask around a bit but you shouldn't have any problems. You can find rooms for as low as $3 a night.

I've been going to Panajachel for nearly 40 years. Rooms Santander on Calle Santander is the original pension in Panajachel, and still costs about 40 quetzals or 5 USD per night / per person. Its centrally located and very secure. Owned by an indigenous Maya family, and has a beautiful garden, and has never closed, even for a day, as far as I know.
