You may both visit for up to 90 days without a visa. After 90 days, you must leave the country for 72 hours and then return for another 90 days and so on. I know people who have been doing the "permanent" tourist things for over 10 years. Enjoy your stay.
Visit the TicosLand.com website for additional information about Costa Rica. The directory is in both English and Spanish.

When you enter Costa Rica, custom officials will stamp your Passport with a Visa that is only good for 90 days After that 90 days you must leave the country for 72 hours and when returning, once again your passport will be stamped with another 90 day Visa. And like TicoLands remarked, there are many that are just "permanent" tourists. ;-)
